  1. I have the Planet Gemini and a Pro1. I cannot speak for the cosmo, but it seems to be roughly the same hardware.

I strongly regret my purchase of the Gemini, to me I wasted a LOT of money. I have tried to make it my daily driver for 2 months, it was a nightmare.

Starting with the main point of this device, the keyboard. Even if I think it is not meant to, I could not thumb type, the device is too large. So you have to find a table, and even so, it is too wobble. The screen is shaking at each of the key hits. And some keys stay stuck or not press strait. Keys are not purely mechanical, it is a common rubber bumper underneath.

The software is awful, I don't remember if I manage to set the keyboard as US-international with dead-keys. Not support neither update since they decide to launch the cosmo few month after.

Event if it is not a phone, they qualify it as a PDA, the phone is just impossible. I could not answer any phone call, the button is buggy. And to make a call, I had to dial the number on the screen open, hit the call button, then close the cam shell, which is almost all the time turn off the phone app...

The metal shell is fragile, after a month of usage, carefully put in a pouch, the shell was falling by itself. I had the camera add-on, and ho my god it was bad. I'm not looking for a excellent camera on a phone, I'm using a proper DSLR for good quality pictures. But this... You cannot event take a picture of a document to read it afterward... Anyway, the camera module failed after 2 weeks...

Even the only positive thing, the quality of the screen, it a problem. The screen is pushing against the keyboard once closed. You have to exchange the screen protector every week as it leaves marks on it...

I have been trying to pledge for one of these, but kickstarter just returns
    image.png.e0806a14896c6d7ffd8710681419ee3b.png
after a while when I try to pay,
I was in for the lowest price several times, until they sold out, but no luck, and only worked on a higher price after perhaps twenty attempts.... So we will see if I ever receive anything....

Got the same errors 3 times, then I thought I will not enter my credit card number once again. I then gave up...

Maybe I will wait to have your wise thoughts  before buying it. Honestly if it was the BB Q10 form factor, I would insist. But to me the titan is still too big unfortunately.

Thank for having shared you problems with Kickstarter, I feel less alone 🙂

I gave up on my Droid 4 and Photon Q back in 2016. To me they became unusable, underpowered sluggish. I would not recommend those. So unless you go for the netman solution, your only option is to drop the landscape requirement and search for either a Galaxy s6 Plus or s7 with a keyboard cover or search for a Priv. The Photon Q was the last slider that I know of. If I recall correctly there was also a landscap clamshell LG for the Japanese market. Good luck tracking on of those.

You're right. I just checked by powering it back to life. I've put lineage 14 at that time. And it's damn slow... It boots and charge the battery though.

It's funny how it looked big at the time I got it, and now it is cute and the good size to me. Sad in a sense...

  4. I'm like you yes. I think the pro1 is excellent, it has the portrait full keyboard I desperately wanted, and it is the only one. But a bit too big. To me the best size was the Droid4, I could easily reach the center of the keyboard with my thumbs.

Nothing is perfect, and regarding my wishes, the pro1 is by far the best option.

  5. I finally decided to buy the tech bundle... I could not reasonably get a second pro1, but want to modestly support fxtec. It would be too bad if they sink now. My pro1 is still in perfect shape, but knowing me, having some spare part is a reasonable anticipation ˆˆ.

It is true it would be even better if the bundle includes some keyboard parts. I know it is quite robust, but these tactile buttons have a life time. I remember my old blackberry Q10 has the "M" button starting failing after 3 years...

Anyway, I let you know how it will going with th bundle.

If it was I would have been fast enough to order one of those super early bird perks 😁

Same here, I completely missed it due to dollar payment not so easy with my card, and now it is a bit out of budget...

  7. I know batteries are evolving, however I'm wondering if charging regularly at more than 1C (faster than one hour or more than 3.2A on 4.2V for the pro1) is still reducing the overall battery lifetime.

Personally I try to not let discharged less than 20% and plug a 2A 5V charger. But I agree, in some situations a quick charge totally make sense.

  8. I had the Gemini, not the cosmo. However my opinion is the Pro1 is far more useful to me.

    TL;DR

My Gemini is fragile, the hinge is plastic, and will eventually break ( and I'm taking good care of my devices ). The metallic plates are locked in place by tiny asperities in the plastic body. This is ageing fast and I start to loose the metal plates just by opening the device. The only good thing is the screen is protected when closed, but, the keys leave marks on it, as the screen is in contact with the keyboard. So use a screen protector film... There is two usbC port, but only one can be used to charge the battery, so better remember which one, or check each time...

It is a nightmare to use the phone. To answer a call, there is a button. Which works some time. To make a call, you have to open the device, dial, and then close it. When you close it, half of the time it closes the phone app, ending the call...

There is no camera. I bought the add-on, it is really bad. So I never used it, and anyway after a month it start to fail in a way I have to remove it to let the phone boot. (hardware corruption?)

The keyboard is fine. It is quite tiny to use the 10 fingers, I needs to be on a table. However I had trouble to setup international behavior.

It has GPS and accelerometers , but it does not have a compass (due to iron shells and cover magnets ?) A bit annoying when you like to use astro map in point of view mode.

On the software part it is very light, even the notification leds app is not finished. Anyway Planet give up the Gemini once they start to work on the Cosmo. So I feel betrayed and abandoned with the bugs. As now they are working on the Astrothing, I hope they're not giving up the Cosmo...

To conclude, to my usage, the Pro1 is far more superior and useful.

  9. The astroslide has an interesting mechanism indeed. However I think it will be very prone to the same problem I had with one Droid4. If a play build up between the two rails, every time you try to open or close it by pushing not at the center, the screen put itself crooked asymmetrically and hang. And it seems to be yet the case on the prototype video. Not speaking of the mandatory ribbon or flex PCB fatigue with such a long travel.

Anyway, I had a Gemini and didn't like it unfortunately (hardware and software, removing the Sim to put it in the Pro1 was such a relief!), so this new planet device is not for me. I like the Pro1 a lot and hope to keep it a long time. The only thing I can hope is a ProMini, size of the Droid4 (small hands here).

Try "massaging" your keyboard and see if that fixes it? If it is a mechanical issue rather than an electrical issue it could help. Maybe your keyboard is still too stiff and too new. I found mine got easier to use as it aged a bit.

Well it seems to work! I was more focused on the hinge (the flex circuit) , trying to open and close the keyboard multiple time. But you're right, I spent a bit of time to press all the keys with my thumbs, and so far I don't see the problem anymore. Maybe I was too careful!

Thanks a lot for the advice!
