@Casey would have to answer that question. For whatever reason, they made the decision (and posted it) that parts would follow after all the phones were shipped. I would speculate that part of it might be to not end up providing parts to people who don't have phones, so the emphasis was to try and get all the phones out. But none of us know.

If I were you I'd take the same approach as you. A data backup and fresh install should be quick and free, it sounds like you have got nothing to lose (but your data) if your Prawn is practically unusable at the moment. If this doesn't help I guess a new battery is the next step, either fitted yourself or return your Prawn to FxTec.
