Solved it. It probably wasn't Magisk itself but an incompatible module that was still installed. Moved everything that looked Magisk-related (find / -iname '*magisk*' 2>/dev/null, same with riru) to the sdcard, rebooted into recovery, sideloaded Magisk-v23.0.zip and it works now.
I am selling my Pro1 (QWERTY SN 1996) I used it as a daily for ~6months or so on TMobile. Never had any issues with the device, but ended up not using the physical keyboard as much as i thought i would and the device hasn't been getting the use it should so i am putting it up for sale.
The phone has always been used with a screen protector and a carbon fiber vinyl look sticker on the back to make the device less slippery. There is some slight slight pocket wear (black paint rubbed to bare in a couple small places see images), but otherwise the device is in mint condition.

Just a hint to potential buyers. It looks like all this wear will be within what will be covered if you use a shell (or flip case), grabbing the lower part. There are multiple alternatives, you could start in the newer end of this long thread or at my DIY experiments.
