Phone won't turn on and won't charge. Advice on what to do?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Got my used Pro1 off ebay several months ago and has worked beautifully since then running Lineage OS 17.1.

But this morning I found that it won't turn on and it won't charge, or at least the indicator light for charging doesn't show up.

Some more info:

I use a 1 amp qi receiver plugged into my phone and use a wireless charging pad to charge my phone. I usually leave the phone on the pad, so it's usually at 100% most days.

I was using the phone pretty heavily yesterday: on a call for several hours.

But the phone has never been dropped while in my possession and has just been resting on my table.

Furthermore, I tried charging the phone with the OEM adapter, but still doesn't appear to charge.

My guess:

I think the issue might be the battery is dead? I don't have a replacement battery, although I did order one as an IGG perk.

Is there any way to revive a dead battery, or is the issue possibly something entirely different?

Please let me know what you all think.

Thank You

I would first try to hold the power button for some 10 seconds as this is a deep (non-destructive) boot.

If noting happend. Try to plug in a wired charger, leave it for say ten minutes and retry the same, to see if you get anything on the display and/or the notification LED

Held the button for 10 sec, charged for 10 min, and held again for 10 sec, but still nothing. Is there anything else I can do?

Maybe take a look at this thread, there is a factory restore tool.

It may help if the problem is at OS level, so wrong data at the wrong position.

I haven't really heard about similar problems, but my friend's Pro1 went into a very similar state.
He was speaking with somebody, then put it on a table and the next time he wanted to use it, it was black.

It did not have charging indication (however, it was slowly charging).
Holding down power button has restarted it (still no sign) and its software was automatically falled back to EDL mode (after about 10-15 minutes), so factory restore program was able to identify it.

However, in that specific case, it turned out the reason was its UFS flash became faulty.
The restore tool gave strange messages, but its cause was the unreachable flash storage, so the very start of the problem was the faulty flash IC.

So, it may worth a try as your case may be different, maybe there is some chance the cause was OS / update-related.

My friend's phone had stock OS installed anyway, and it was replaced by F(x)tec.

I have experience with a non working phone. LED also not lighting up when connected to a charger. I tried oldskool 5V chargers, qi-chargers and PD-chargers. Eventually got it working using the original cable on an USB2 port on an old Toshiba laptop (took a few minutes). Worth a try...

Had to use the restore tool by the way.

Can be hard to guess the cause, hopefully just a software bug teasing. If it is hardware, battery is not very likely, it is more likely that the usb-port is somehow damaged. Dirt is a common culprit in a usb-plug, but unlikely as you had the coil plate installed in the port. But perhaps an unlucky bump to this broke the usb-port?

Anyway, there are USB power meters, it may be a good idea to connect the Pro1 through it to see if it is charging (or if there is any current flowing through the cable).
This would be good to filter out battery / charge-related problems.

As for charging, it should have some significant current but when it is charged, the current should drop significantly.
If the software cannot be started, the charge indicator will not be driven, but charger circuit itself is working at a basic level.

Maybe one discharge-related problem may happen when the loader is set to boot up the device on charger connection (which is stock default), but I think you should see some logo in that case, not simply a blank device.

Also, try to connect it to a computer and look if it identifies the phone (dmesg / lsusb under Linux or maybe unknown hardware in device manager under Windows).
...just in case if it is in EDL mode like my friend's phone was.
