  1. I ordered similar ones, still waiting for them to arrive. The upside of these protectors is, that they cover the curved edges and the application is not too hard, but the big downside is that they are rather soft, I don't think they protect the screen from an impact. And unfortunatley, the adhesive on the edges tends to become loose, allowing dirt to get between the protection cover and the screen's glass after a while of use..

  2. I never tried sailfish myself, but of course every now and then I stumble across some ports for various devices, and I will definately try it one day. But I can't imagine to use it as daily driver if there are lots of apps missing, thus making the benefits of a hardware keyboard useless (It's not about whatsapp, I don't even have that). I am not willing to give up a handful of Android apps, even if that means I might be missing something else.

thank you for your introduction and explanation of sailfish and jolla! I'm just curious: you mention swipe and gesture input if i got it right, that is of course a benefit for touchscreen-only devices. but doesn't the hardware keyboard make this kind of input obsolete? for me, the hardware keyboard is not an addition to touchscreen input, it ideally replaces most of my touchscreen usage.. But i'll be watching the sailfish developements for the pro1 closely.

  3. Welcome aboard,

of course there will be the on-screen keyboard available if the phone is not opened, be it landscape or portrait mode. The desire Z does have the same feature, just as any other keyboard phone where the physical board can be 'hidden'.

I don't have a definitive answer on the camerabutton-question, EskeRahn should be the first to answer this question based on a pre-production model. Or anyone who attendet the London-Event?

  4. People are still, and depending the OS and Security Patch root isn't even necessary. For that specific app there has always been a workarond until today. Banking/TAN apps however are most of the time unusuable on rooted or even non-stock unrooted roms. If someone really depends on those apps, i would not recommend rooting.

In my opinion, rooting is not as necessary as it was years ago. An unlocked bootloader to flash a custom recovery is enough to get rid of bloatware and unwanted system-apps, manually backing up and restoring app-data, and tampering with the hosts file for example.

  5. I played with a Bluetooth Keyboard slider attachment for the Samsung Galaxy S4 for a while - it was horrible. The reasons for that are, that the thickness was just too much, and the quality of the keyboard itself was even worse than using the on screen keyboard. The clicks were so loud that it was not possible to not attract strange looks while typing, the overall handling was difficult and not thought through, intermittend conneciton issues, especially when i was using other bluetooth connections (hands-free, tethering, filetransfer).. switched back to the Photon Q pretty quickly, but did not stop searching for better solutions of an attachment slider. then there was the Moto Mod, and you know where that journey ends.. cheers to edlinfan for trying so hard and sharing your experience!

  6. I sent a request to Zagg for creating a template for their "invisible shield on demand" product, which is a machine which can cut protections in-store specifically for the model. They also protect curved edges. Requested as Elephone U Pro, since this is already available.

If they accept the request, look out for shops which have such a machine in their stores (Media Markt / Saturn in Germany for example).

  7. First process, as CornholioGSM mentioned, is adding some kind of 'cushion', these are the edges where the PCB will be installed, if there are sharp edges it might damage the PCB, that is why this soft material is applied.

Second process is a QC of the part, to check if the surface of the corners and the frame is smooth and even.

Great to get this documented by FxTec. :)

  8. I have seen Burn-in on Galaxy S2, S3, Note 2, so older devices aswell. I assume the usage hours for the displays was not that high in the past, and yes, the overall brightness which increased with the new screens does add to this effect.

I do prefer OLED over LCD, great colours, and no problems of stains due to the backlight getting dirty. And easyer to refurbish. (although curved does not help here..)

  9. What is the problem with a button-combo like other manufacturers or ROM builds use?

For example clicking the volume button twice and hold them for enabling and disabling the LED? Much less room for accidental activations, saving alot of time calibrating and implementing the function, when the effort of pressing a key or two is not saving any user-time at all?

  10. Nintendo sold one kind of the DS series without a charging cable aswell, since the same plug was used between various generations.

I personally can not have enough chargers. More and more things are charged via USB nowadays. I doubt leaving the charger will cut the costs noticeably.

  11. Snapped my Desire Z (G2) open an close when I was bored. the z hinge was satisfying. I don't dare to do that with my Photon Q, because replacement flex cables are hard to get, and they tend to wear out quickly.. I'm looking forward to see how long the Pro¹'s flex will last, and how easy the replacement will be.

  12. I was told they plan to make replacement parts and spares available. The backside does not look glued too me, but even if, nowadays that should not be a problem to those who repair phones for a living.

Worst case scenario: use a cell which nearly identical dimensions and solder the PCB to it. Did this with my photon q batteries aswell.. maybe we can get an idea on how to open the device when more detailed pictures are being released, when the phone is in the process of making. Will do a tear-down as soon as I have one.

  13. The Photon Q is 14mm thick aswell, I am additionally using a device with 17mm thickness aswell. No problems for me there. The Pro¹ is larger than the Photon Q, so the thickness might be more noticeable when you have the phone in your pocket.

I am waiting until I have the Pro¹ and have it setup as daily driver until I can rate the handling of the phone. No further estimating possible.
