But about the F(x)tec "tech kit: going for $219 right now: like you say, in includes a few things, like a spare battery. It's actually not a bad thing. But if I just need a screen assembly and don't want a battery I shouldn't have to pay for that too. Anyway... I'll keep you guys posted about what I do.

Ok, so way back when I said "I'll keep you guys posted" about my adventures trying to get my screen replaced. 7 months later, here's an update:

Tl;dr: I still have not been able to get an official replacement screen from F(x)tec. 7 months of having effectively abandoned my Pro1 for practical reasons, and not being involved with the community at all. Trying to talk myself out of demanding a refund for the replacement screen I ordered, but I can't say that's going well.

So the first thing I did was check eBay in case anyone was selling Pro1 parts, or just a dead Pro1 for parts. I was in luck! Or so I thought. Someone listed a broken Pro1 (but screen was ok) in an auction with a $50 opening bid. I usually avoid eBay auctions like the plague, but this time I thought "what the heck." And my bids were leading for quite a chunk of the auction, until the bids started going north of $300 USD and I thought "this is silly..."

So I reached out to F(x)tec and was informed that I did not have to order the "Tech kit" bundle, I could just order a new screen assembly alone for £149.00, and I was assured that I would receive it fairly quickly (still weeks, of course). I considered my options - still better than paying for a whole "tech bundle" and waiting August, but not quick enough to deal with the fact that I did not have a useable phone at the time. So after some thought, I decided to both get a new "cheap" phone (I'll spare you the namedropping) and order the replacement screen anyway. My Pro1 was to become a secondary phone, but I wanted to preserve it for posterity.

The invoicing and payment went smoothly and quickly, of course. But weeks passed, no sign of the screen or even that it was shipped. So in late April I enquire "what's up" and I get told the usual song & dance that supply of parts is still low and only a few screens are being produced, so my screen probably wouldn't be shipped until August after all. Fine, that was sort of what I expected anyway, and by that point I had committed to fixing the phone as a collector piece rather than my daily driver, but I was still not happy to have been told earlier that I would not have to wait until August. But, whatever, decided to wait...

So, August has come and gone, and not even a peep. I reached out to F(x)Tec in August, and predictably, I didn't even get a response back. I don't want to be the Nth person to complain about the awful customer service and communications - but come on! This is just pathetic. I don't want to rehash the endless discussions about the whys & hows of the abysmal customer communications that this company has, but I also can't pretend that it's anything other than abysmal. If it wasn't that we are all somewhat obsessed with keyboards on phones here, this company would not have made it past January last year. And yes, while my current daily driver is just fine - I want to chuck it across the room almost every time I try to type something on it. Screen keyboards still suck, and probably always will, but that's not a reason for us physical QWERTY enthusiasts to be left twisting in the wind.

Anyway... sorry for the rant I sort of promised myself I wouldn't write, but I really just want to know what the heck is going on with my replacement screen, and I'm "this close" to requesting a refund, because after all this time, this phone is clearly not part of my life anymore. Sigh...

I bet the number produced for the S10, have at the least three zeroes extra, so not unexpected that they can do it cheaper...

Anyway the $219 offer it is a bit more than the display. Also frame, narcissistic camera, sensors, pcb and not the least assembly, it all adds up. And the offer includes a battery too.

So sure it is a lot of money to shell out if a display breaks, but I doubt they have a high profit margin on them.

As @EskeRahn wrote, replacement display is available on Aliexpress.
However, you have to separate original display from the frame and glue the new one in.
So you may need some tools like "guitar picker", but it seems it usually comes together with these replacement screens.

I have changed my screen a few months ago as my original screen started to get spontaneous touch actions.
However, yesterday I had to replace my replaced screen again as it has started to has problems which initially seemed to be "solved" by turning the screen off/on again, but yesterday it became completely dead - it is like a contact problem inside the display which went permanent.
    This was the problem.

Be prepared these displays are not perfect, see the corners in the video.
I have tested all of the three spare displays I had and all of them have similar problems and one of them has a big black spot (complete circle) around the middle-left edge when in portrait.

Also, the display I finally put in the phone does not have greenish tint when the brightness is low...
...instead, it is blueish or a bit purple-ish... my previous replaced screen was greenish just like the original...

...but at least I can use my phone again and I could repair it in the very same day it broke...

I might eventually consider that route (and/or get the help of a trustworthy repair person as @EskeRahn suggested). I have replaced screens on some old phones before, and I far prefer to just replace the whole assembly rather than trying to just replace the glued-in AMOLED panel itself. But waiting until Aug 2021 for a $250 kit from FxTec seems a bit much...

  4. Right... thanks, My biggest concern is that I am quite happy to deal with connector ribbons and screws, but I haven't fared well dealing with adhesives in phones...

Battery and replacement screen are currently available at their their Indiegogo page, however, I don't know for how long.

I also hope these parts will be available to purchase soon directly from them, especially the USB panel... and maybe the keyboard.

So... is the "tech bundle" on Indiegogo the only realistic option for getting a spare screen? (short of getting a defective Pro1 for parts, assuming the screen is ok).

I dropped my phone yesterday (common theme here!) and while the screen did not crack, it stopped working (i.e., screen will not turn on) even though the phone still works (notification LED lights up, I feel the fingerprint sensor buzzer going). I opened the screen assembly and discovered that the ribbon connector for the AMOLED panel itself just broke off (it didn't just get dislodged, the ribbon itself tore - see photo). Seems like a very slow and costly option to replace a tiny and brittle connector ribbon... 😭

  6. I saw one reference earlier in the thread to banking apps working fine. Has anyone else tried out other apps with security requirements? I'm specifically of enterprise provisioning stuff like Microsoft Intune Company Portal. I'm actually using my Pro1 for work (THIS IS WHAT KEYBOARDS ARE MADE FOR!!) and I don't want to switch from stock to 17.1 or any custom ROM if it can't support Intune...

ADD II: Well that alone did not do it, currently I suspect Greenify also to cause problems. It is better without the above, but removing one and not both does NOT fix the problem.

Greenify caught my eye (maybe because it's highlighted 🙂)... haven't used that app since Android 6/7 or so! Does it actually have any benefits on these recent versions of Android? I thought the "native" power management had made it quite obsolete by now...

  8. I regularly either mute myself or activate some other function by accident on "traditional" phone calls with this phone. And it's also slow to turn the screen on when I move the phone away from my head. There is definitely something weird with this proximity sensor, more so than other phones I've used.

I tried every possible combination on and off, trust me 🙄. This has no effect on the pairing process.

Did you look at the Dev options only? I found that the dev options settings did nothing, and that I had to turn off the aptX HD option in the Bluetooth settings (main settings, not dev) for my headset:

  10. Here's something I just noticed is also fixed in the latest 0825 update: Android PhotoScan finally works. Before it would freeze or crash - not sure I saw anyone else report this bug (some other photo scan apps would crash too).

  11. I forgot to take my charger with me a few months ago (in The Before Times) on an overnight trip. Put my Pro1 on battery saver mode and made it through until I got home, probably close to 40 hrs round trip door-to-door (gotta say it was pretty low when I got in the door... but it was still on!)

  12. Interesting... I tried clearing storage & cache but the UI didn't change for me. I had heard that the stock camera app was supposed to be updated, maybe you're one of the few to get the update?

  13. Anyone else notice that when F(x)Tec posts something to Instagram or Twitter showing the Pro1 taking a photo, the app that's shown is always some kind of GCam port, never the Snapdragon app? I wonder what port the F(x)Tec social media team uses. So far my queries to the social media accounts have gone unanswered...

Ever tried alternative layouts like FX Qwerty

No I haven't - I'll take a look. But I just wanted to report back on whether any of these issues had been addressed in the ROM, since people were wondering.

Hey, some very good news on twitter, finally looks like some software fixes coming:

I'm hoping that whatsapp thing means the audio-crackle, which is one of the major issues (and a 1 line code fix) that has been plaguing everyone still on stock OS.

And glad they fixed Esc key.  Hopefully they also enabled wake-on-keypresss (for every key) and keyboard backlight on keypress too while messing with Esc.  Hopefully they made SYM key right-alt.  Hopefully set keyboard to alpha. Etc.

Hopefully this also means someone is finally working on stock firmware and we'll start to see other issues getting fixed soon too...

Sadly I can confirm that wake- and backlight-on-keypress are not enabled with this update 😞 And Sym key seems to do nothing still...

I now think this problem might not be due to Wireless Update itself, but some wider change in the 20200620 update. This is because I have seen increased notifications from three other apps, which I'm sure weren't happening prior to this update. In particular, these were Tor Browser, Handy News Reader, and Etar.

The behaviour is similar, in that a notification from these apps appears for a couple of seconds then disappears, with nothing of substance in the notification itself. In the case of Tor Browser, the notification icon is the exact same plain circle that Wireless Update shows (the others use their own icons).

The timing of these phantom notifications is not the same as for Wireless Update - i.e. they don't seem to appear just by Wi-Fi turning off and on, but as I say, otherwise appear similar.

I'm wondering if what is happening is that what were formerly background tasks that these apps were always doing are now being exposed to users?

I'm experiencing this too, all kinds of very short "updates" all the time - Google Play Music for instance, and others I don't even remember right now, in addition to the Wireless Updater. Definitely feels like the latest update changed something in the background...

No idea if this is related,or if I'm imagining this, but my phone also seems warmer since the latest update, especially when it's charging. Then again, it is stinking hot in general lately where I live...

Depends on how they set it up. I didn't have to give that when I was using Good/BlackBerry Work, everything ran inside its own sandbox.

The stock firmware is working with my Office 365 + InTune right now, so I'll keep it as-is.

Same, I'm using O365 + Intune with stock firmware, both the previous one and the latest one from a few days ago, working great. This (office productivity) is one use case that this phone is a champ at. Love being able to use they keyboard for emails & Teams messages.

  18. I see you mentioned Intune in the post title. FWIW I installed Intune on my Pro1 (from the Google store) to access our corporate systems with no issues, working fine. Locked device, In Fastbood mode I get the same screen as you (except that my serial number is visible - guessing/hoping you blacked it out) - that is, no Secure Boot, Device locked. So I don't think Secure Boot is your problem (at least not specifically for installing Intune).

Only difference I can think of: my device is showing up as Certified in the Play Store, though I'm on the 20200304 OTA. And that doesn't mean it passes SafetyNet - I haven't look at that specifically, but I know Netflix won't update anymore so I'm pretty sure my device isn't actually passing SafetyNet.
