So Steam Link couldn't connect at all through the tether, for whatever reason.

...however, for reasons I cannot even begin to fathom... it now works fine* over wifi, and reports much lower network times to my local PC than any test via command line pings. It's possible that ICMP is deprioritised while UDP operates at full speed?

*there is some audio crackling, but I believe this is a more general issue with the device.

I suspect it's the server that your device is picking up to do the test with, unless if you do the test from your home network somehow. Maybe check if the battery manager is on? On our work wifi,

Was that test done over wifi or cellular? I am talking about over wifi, by running the ping command, in a terminal shell, pinging the address of the wireless access point 6 feet away.   I ch

Was that with Steam Link trying to auto-discover the Steam software running on the laptop?  If so, did you disable wifi and ethernet on the PC and disable wifi on the phone before connecting?  You might have to restart Steam on he PC too, after turning on the tether.

Did pings work across the tether?

Yeah, I think that audio problem is a know bug they are working on, and happens in multiple apps.

Regarding latency, it isn't clear how much it affects real world usage vs latency testing tools.  I've used a tool that tests with TCP and HTTP and get slowness too.  But that is with tools, not applications.  And I suppose UDP could be a whole different animal.  It is tough when the way it acts with tools isn't the way it acts with real world use, as the whole point is to use the tools to diagnose real world issues or find out ahead of time if there might be some issues.  I guess, in your case, the main thing is that it is working well! :-)

I've found cases where my router needs to be rebooted to get back to getting the proper wifi speeds.  It could be something like that, if you rebooted it recently?
