pegerc 0
Is this phone going to be able to use with new 5G system??? Clarence
netman 1,424
As it has snapdragon 835 SoC, I'm pretty sure it will not.
Waxberry 638
The current 5G solution (SD855) is actually a 4G SoC + 5G modem. In theory, SD835 *could* get 5G as well. But this is down to Qualcomm's decision. For the current set-up it does not support 5G.

pegerc 0
They might as well not bother to bring the soon to be obsolete 4G phone to market. I do not see any reason to spend this amount of money for old tech. They need to re-think this and understand what the people want when they are ready to buy a new smart phone. They want a State of the Art phone with the latest processor, best camera and highest picture quality screen and support 5G. There is time to redesign this phone. If they don't this phone will be sales flop or worse yet never be made and never see the light of day. They disappointed everyone when they did not bring the Motomod keyboard out. DO NOT MAKE SAME MISTAKE.
Doktor Oswaldo 904
No that is just not true. Some people want that. But for me it is keyboard, battery and then price. I would rather not upgrade the hardware in this and then pay a grand on it. Most people do not need more power than that on a phone. And 5G is not even here yet. It will take at least another 2 years until it is worth getting a 5G phone (Probably another 10 years in the U.S. until the coverage is there). So that is the last point where more expensive hardware should be put in (at least in my opinion). But you are partially right. There is a tipping point. If the tech is too old, nobody is gonna buy it. So while this hardware is fine for the moment, this phone will not sell another 2 years with the same specs. So while I think it is fine for now, but there must soon be an upgrade version (If the sales are ok) with 5G and a better CPU.

They want a State of the Art phone with the latest processor, best camera and highest picture quality screen and support 5G. There is time to redesign this phone. If they don’t this phone will be sales flop or worse yet never be made and never see the light of day. They disappointed everyone when they did not bring the Motomod keyboard out. DO NOT MAKE SAME MISTAKE. You would get a terrible experience with a 5G only phone, as the net is just starting to roll out. and it will take years to get total coverage, especially in rural areas. Most devices still supports 2G for the same reason. IMHO it is always nice to have the ability to fall back to the slower older generation of networks, when the reception of the newer is poor or non-existent. And while some of us are so eager to get a keyboard phone that we might be prepared to pay for things being the absolutely newest technology, this might well loose some users in the other end, not finding it worth the money if it was say over £1000. And with fewer users the development costs would need to be distributed over fewer devices, sky rocketing the device price further. So though I personally would have liked a newer chipset too, I do understand the choice to keep the price down.
_DW_ 628
When I got 4G I had to turn it off because it was worse than 3G speeds and connection issues all the time I also had the same problem with 3G. I don't expect any different with 5G and by the time it is reliable I would be looking to upgrade anyway!!
gtmaster303 0
4g obselete? Hahahaha you're funny 5g is a gimmick and there's very few people that need those speeds. Unless you're running a mobile web server or torrenting massive files on the go, 4g is fine for now and many years to come
nbtodd 0
I remember back in 2008, Sprint was touting their 4G WiMax deployment. Conversely AT&T was on a massive "but it's not 3G" and "we have the nation's largest 3G network" TV ad campaign. I asked around and nobody knew what 3G was. Today while the general public - to which we appeal - is more informed, they don't necessarily care which network technology they're connected to as long as it works - but I've noticed they do like to know anyway (Tx/Rx arrows please!). In my city I often fall back to or switch to EvDo (3G) because it's often faster than 4G due to congestion and eHRPD is a pain in the behind. Right now Verizon is the only carrier in the US with an operational 5G system and it's only in two cities. As I recall they only have one 5G-ready phone in the near future, from Motorola. Apple/TSC won't have a model till well into next year. gtmaster303 is absolutely right 5G is a gimmick. LTE is a newly-matured technology and mass-installation will continue far in to the future. It will be years before a country is partially blanketed in 5G and frankly, it's only going to be as fast as your phone.
