I think the date of 2019. October 24 (which is also the same on your account and mine) is the date of mass migration, I was also active on the old forum which had our original registration dates shown. Anyway, my number is 5192 and also the very same date is shown at Waxberry's account.

Our user id may be the order of migration and I think Erik has tested the new forum before migration started and that is why he has number 1. 🙂

It is indeed quite similar to what we see in step 8 in your link.
All that is needed to swap it is a little heat to loosen the adhesive, and the key mat can be removed.

But why the qwertZ plates are harder to get than the qwertY I do not know.

A GUESS could be that they are too small to get priority, if the company making them are very busy catching up for a larger client after the corona lockdown - but pure guesswork...

The worst part (at least in my opinion) of the N900 does not even shown in this teardown. 🙂

Here it is:

That ribbon cable "grows" directly from the motherboard.

Anyway, I loved that phone but I didn't like this kind of connection and I met some boards where somebody (who felt it is a good idea to repair it without appropriate knowledge) broke down that wire.

The microUSB connector is close to that cable and that connector was often broke in that phone.

The two versions of the keyboard was not really a good decision they made as it is very good for users but a pain during manufacturing in small sizes.

(However, I disliked the shifted QWERTY and would have been convinced with only an unshifted QWERTY version which is closer to the QWERTZ model I chose only because it was the unshifted variant which is much better for international use.)

So I think it is not really the manufacturing of the plates are the problem but the whole assembling process which differs only in one step but should be managed differently and that is the problem.
As the demand is smaller (and they did not even sell it outside of Europe), it seems to be better regarding production cost to manufacture in larger batches of one variant and QWERTY definitively had higher number of orders.

That is my own opinion anyway.

I'm certainly with you there. As many in here already know.

And your guess on the reason is (at the least) as good as mine.

But the device can be fully assembled and tested less the key-tops, so they could add it as (one of) the very last step before packing.

True, but it may also add some complications like either the phones can not be assembled then tested in one step but have to also handle specific amounts then do a fully assembled test or the specific amounts should be managed separately in appropriate number of items then change these parts to the another (appropriate) one.

It may be easier if somebody is there to manage and control these changes but much harder to manage these "variations" from a place far away and COVID still not helps to travel a lot for this purpose.
