Both Ctrl keys dead 😢

Recommended Posts

Both the left and right Ctrl keys don't respond on my Pro1 😢. I'm on stock Android 9, and I'm pretty sure this is a hardware rather than software problem. All other keys are fine.

Any ideas what to look for? I'm happy to open it up.

Basically Pro1 only has one ctrl key reachable from two places, so a problem at one side may affect also the other side easily.

Is it definitely one physical key not two keys sending the same keycode?  In most keyboards (not phone specific) lots of keys are connected and when a trace breaks usually the whole group past the break stops working, for two keys so far apart to die but no others sounds strange.  Not impossible as there could be a trace running across the bottom between them, but definitely strange.  I'd suggest ripping it apart to have a look but if there are pics somewhere that would be good to see first.

Right, usually keyboard builds up as a matrix and also Pro1's keyboard was built this way.

However, there are a few keys which have its dedicated IO for allowing truly independent keypresses and these keys basically are the function keys...
...so yes, although Pro1's keyboard has a keyboard matrix, ctrl keys wired together and go to a dedicated IO.

Oh of course - no diodes and mods need to work with any key without ghosting.

First thing to check would be that the ribbon cable is seated correctly - the end pin it could have disconnected before the others only breaking Ctrl.  If there's a big ribbon going from the keyboard to the main PCB reconnect it, if not the problem is within the keyboard.  Pics would be good.

So this happened to my back key, when I lifted the keyboard out I noticed that the back key area had a crack or break that lead to going dead. I did not actually check with FXtec if it would be covered under the warranty, so i think it might be good to see if the white pad under the keys shows any wear and tear. But that only happened with the back key for me, no other keys were impacted.

Did you try the keys during boot/ recovery? Wouldn't be the first time it was software related...

I'm not sure how I would do that?

One reason I think it's hardware is because at first the problem was intermittent, and pressing the key harder seemed to work, but now it doesn't work no matter how hard I press.

I'll open it up at some point, when it's less hot!

Boot into recovery and view /tmp/recovery.log. This is an option under advanced. CRTL keys are used as pageup/pgdown

I don't seem to have either an advanced option or an option to view recovery.log. Remember that I'm on stock.

Though I doubt that it is software, you could try to install and run KeyEvent. Showing the make and break codes for each key.

If you press one key, and keep it down, and then another you will see that it you wil get independent codes, and two different up's
If you do the same with the two shift keys, you will see that they act as parallel. Press and hold 1, the press and hold the other, and relase the first then the second, and it acts exactly as if it was one key. The yellow arrows does not (and if they work, the ctrls act in the same way as the shifts(
