Doktor Oswaldo 904
The need for a confirmation from a moderator makes this forum really really slow. Wouldn't it be enough to make the confirmation a must for new threads, but not for answers? In the current state it takes hours to make an answer visible, which may lead to a lot of people saying the same thing.
EskeRahn 5,460
Well I too think that the current response to the attacks last week is not optimal. I hope they find out some white-list system, where people with some number of thanks from other white-listed members gets white-listed, as well as people that already left comments in here for say at the least a fortnight ago without the posts getting marked as spam, reported or deleted. This would give us some mutual white-listing within the community automatically. If this get misused by a group, it could be take down again. But until now it has even been hard to find what threads got comments awaiting approval. I had to browse through all seven pages with over a 100 threads, to see if each thread had one waiting.... So I have checked less frequent than with a simple F5 and threads at the top of the list.
netman 1,424
Yeah, the spammers are unlikely to leave any sensible messages so it would be quite easy to tell who to whitelist...
_DW_ 628
letting through reply's / new topics from people with thanks should be enough to prevent the spam. And you need a moderator page! :D
EskeRahn 5,460
Yeah, the spammers are unlikely to leave any sensible messages so it would be quite easy to tell who to whitelist… Yeah, I would prefer a somewhat automated system, so I would not need to white-list each one-by-one... But indeed on comments from new users it would almost always be posible to tell if the answer make sense in the context. But a clever spammer could misuse if a first comment was enough to get white-listed, by creating a few sensible comments, and then let a bot take over spamming with that account... so it would need to be a bit more clever. I doubt those cases would happen a lot, there will always be a need for manual moderation unless the system is overly restrictive. Automatic whitelisting would be nice for sure though. Craig 1,435
What I don't like is not being able to edit my own posts. I have a habit of posting then thinking of something I want to add or change immediately thereafter. The way it is now, I can't even see what I posted. And yeah it does slow things down. At least white-list people who have been forum members for a while (over a month?) until a real solution is in place. I don't think something based on thanks would work too well, cuz wouldn't scammers just make multiple accounts and thank themselves or something.
Craig 1,435
It really slows things down. I logged on earlier this afternoon, and absolutely nothing has changed since then, probably becuz it's all awaiting moderation. I never even noticed the spam posts this was meant to stop, it never bothered me.

Well at the least that could be handled by only counting thanks from previously white-listed accounts. :)
EskeRahn 5,460
never even noticed the spam posts this was meant to stop, it never bothered me. Well we had over 500 spam threads making the overview close to useless, but luckily it was handled quickly by the team, so glad to hear that you were not affected by it. _DW_ 628
Yeah I saw it, was a mess :( Hopefully they can come up with a less aggressive system soon.

Did you bother to READ the thread you are posting in? But until now it has even been hard to find what threads got comments awaiting approval. I had to browse through all seven pages with over a 100 threads, to see if each thread had one waiting…. So I have checked less frequent than with a simple F5 and threads at the top of the list. ...but I can not find the comment you are referring to. I see no comments from you awaiting moderation. What thread have you commented in?.
nidajeny 0
No, I’m not reading anymore due to this random delay. But I like you Eske. You answer always fast. Keep it up.

Well I have been away for a fortnight on holiday, only checking sporadically, so the staff had to handle the forum too on top of all their other chores. The massive spam-attack required immediate action, and unfortunately the current strict system has the negative side effect of being dependent of manual approvals, and not the least of someone realising that there are comments awaiting approval... Hook 3,022
I'm wondering if there is a control in the forum software to set up time based rules (e.g., can only create 1 new thread per 24 hours, can make only 3 replies in an hour). It's a much less intrusive limitation, but would likely turn away most robots. Just a thought.

It’s a much less intrusive limitation, but would likely turn away most robots. Just a thought. The problem seems to be that it is indeed manual spam and not a robot. But your suggestion would help anyway, since it would limit the mass of spam to a not so intrusive amount.
Erik 1,487
This will improve soon once our new forum platform is up. The current manual moderation requirement, to my knowledge, will no longer be necessary after we migrate this forum to the new one.
Doktor Oswaldo 904
This issue seems to be not resolved. Is there any news on this front?

The new forum, to my knowledge, is already being set up and it should be ready for use in a matter of days. Erik
EskeRahn 5,460
The issues are still here, and in waiting of a new forum, I have gone so impatient that I made a small monitoring tool that browses through things, rather than having to do it manually... HOPEFULLY this will give faster response-times in the moderation (when I'm not too busy with other stuff) ...I know it is silly, but expected the moderation-mess to last for days or at the worst weeks, not months.... Had I known, I had made the tool back then...
michael.bosscha 142
That's really nice yes. Seeing as there have been no significant changes since the July 31st message from FX, I think we'll have to roll with what we can do ourselves...
