  1. I (now) understand your point. But I would not shift the numbers. It seems like a good idea. But I imagine, that since you are typing with your thumbs, it does not really matter if the numbers are above the correct keys. I image it is easier to find them if they at their normal places. I just think it would be good to shift as few keys as possible. But that is again only based on my Imagination. Could be dead wrong if you finally had the keyboard in your hand.
  2. Hard to decide without trying it out. But tend to the non-shifted layout, just because we are used to that. But without any hands-on testing we have to trust fxtec. If a non-shifted layout leads to holding the phone always on the left side, close to tipping over... well I would prefer the shifted layout.
  3. To be totally clear. I am quite happy with the phone as it is. I am aware that it is impossible to change the screen now. Of course. And if they would I would say: "Well thats way too late. It is gonna get problems". And I also know that i can't know for sure which version would be cheaper for fx. All I say at the moment is: It is unlikely to be cheaper (but possible) and they should go for a flat screen in the next iteration (in my opinion). The reason why I am keeping this Issue alive is because I want to understand the decision. I am keen to know if there are any real advantages of
  4. As a Swiss I have to admit. We are a really small market. And Switzerland is the iPhone country per excellence. So while I would love to have a real swiss layout to choose from it is probably not worth the struggle out of a business perspective. I think it is better to make a Layout which fits one market perfectly then try to blend all possible qwertz layouts together. Yes some people might be of the loosing side. But the worst thing for the phone would be when everybody says: "Yes the keyboard is good, but has a strange layout". It is way more acceptable if someone says "Yes it is good, it ha
  5. Haha =) Not really. Most of Switzerland talks Swiss-German and writes German. Of course there are French and Italian parts. but if you don't live near these regions you won't use it. Not any more at least. We still have it in School until Highschool, but I am not that young either. Thanks to globalization and the Internet English has taken over. We go further on vacation than 50 years back. And even the French now have to start using English with Tourists. Rhateo-Romance is an entirely different thing. Only 1% of the Swiss Population speaks it (yes native Swiss people not some sort of migr
  6. Exactly what I mean. But if it ends before the edge, the edged part of the display is again unused. On another Note on this Topic: The new Samsung Galaxy S10 will have a Lite edition (S10e) with a flat screen! So Samsung the shiny knight of curved screens does think there are people who want a flat screen or at least buy it even with a flat screen. But the real interesting thing is, it is the cheapest model which has the flat screen. So it seems to be indeed cheaper, even for Samsung, to have a flat screen. This does not 100% mean that it is the same for this phone (Samsung manufacture
  7. Hard question. Switzerland is a bad example. There is no useful Grammar and no useful Spellchecker. Our written Language is German (with some special rules). Yes we write Swiss-German with friends and so on. We just try to type like it sounds. If you write anything to a Person you don't know it gonna be written in German (At least If you have some minor Form of Education). So the Answer to Swiss texts is: No spell-checks or settings at all (which makes using a keyboard like swipe a lot of work to get the dictionary started. I have given up, it just can't detect if I am writing German or Swiss
  8. I fear that swiping from the display to the edge is not that comfortable. You would probably need a lot of pressure to not lose contact with your thumb. So I guess the swiping must ignore the curved part. Edge-only swiping could be a useful feature (scroll through open apps). But it seems that Neither Sailfish nor Android are adding any functionality to the edge. Even Samsung removed it because nobody used it anyway (as far as I know that was the reason). If the Edge does anything at all to swiping it seems to be interfering with it in my opinion. But since somebody said it would help I w
  9. Interesting, in the US, Swiss and German Layout ( and ) are right next to each other (Of course not on the same keys, that would made it to easy to switch). The reason I ask is, because I believe a lot of people insert both braces after each other and then use the back key to get inside it (You see that a lot in programming at least). This is not a productive thing to do so it isn't to bad to make it harder ;-).
  10. I already had this discussion in other threads but for people which are typing different languages on the same keyboard the US-International is a solid way to go. This should work for any combination of western (latin) languages (don't pin me down on the exact terminus, but just languages which are using latin letters). A layout for a specific combinations of two languages however is unrealistic.
  11. Thanks a lot. But this seems to be perfectly possible with a flat screen too.
  12. Capslock is also very common in German-based layouts. I as a Swiss am used to the capslock not the arrow. I would not bother with that and just go for capslock on all keyboards. But that is just my personal opinion. One question to the suggested Layout: Why is the order of the brackets like that: { [ ] } and not like thath { } [ ]. It is not a big problem but seems rather special.
  13. To be clear, I will also buy it no matter what screen. I am glad that somebody builds a slider phone again, everything else is secondary. But I doubt that the curved screen is cheaper. Most of the phones still have a flat screen, they have to be cheaper. But could be a special deal or something, b2b is a strange market. If it really is cheaper, sure go for it why not. But since I highly doubt that it seems like a rather strange decision. The sources I posted earlier in this thread are indicating that not even Galaxy users really like the curved screen. Put the money in a highly controve
  14. Sorry it got really out of hand. My statement in this thread was just: "If you print national layout, keep it as close as possible to the pc layout". These whole modifier discussion took off from there. I would love to see a QWERTZ print. Yes I am not quite sure if I would take that, but I am not the norm. Most people prefer the layout they know from the pc. And I care more about the success of this project than about the right print for me. But yes I personally would love a US-International print on the keyboard. And I just wanted do explain people who are searching a similar thing, wh
  15. That would have to be a lot of special characters. Since you have around 46 special chars per modifier-key. And of course some national letters deserve a one-stroke key. And again I am all for that. But we are talking about two different things: 1. A dedicated layout for some languages. National letters should be one-stroke if used a lot (as close as possible to the pc layout). 2. A US-International Keyboard. This is worth a lot for users who use shortcuts heavily (vim users for example). Since a lot of shortcut are designed for the US-Layout it can be pain to use another layout (vim
  16. Yes that is correct. But the idea behind the US-Deadkey method is to not be dependent on language. So every possible accent is a dead key -> " ' ^ ` <- you have to press all of them twice to get the char tipped. and "a gives you an ä and 'a gives you an á and so on. This leads to a lot of dead keys which is especially horrible as a programmer. As far as I know this is the default way windows handles the US-International Input. I prefer to have a special modifier (defaults to "Alt Gr" i think) which works exactly as a fn key but is standardized. "Alt Gr" + "Q" gives you an ä where "A
  17. Do not get me wrong, absolutely understand that. I recommend to keep the layout as default as possible. But this post was about somebody wanting the US-Layout but with the possibility to type special chars. Then I prefer the US-International layout way way before dead keys. I am not sure what I want QWERTZ or QWERTY. Since I too use my phone mostly for texts in my native language. So I do completely agree with you, just don't want to have dead keys at all prices. It is horrible to have to type double-quote two times. Always get in rage if I have to write on a windows-system ;-)
  18. So in the end it is about style and screen size? I've read a lot that people with curved screen do not use the curved part of the screen. So would a bezel really mean we lose anything? I don't want to be an ass about that, i really want to understand if there are any valid pros of a curved screen. And more screen estate may be a valid pro.
  19. I absolutely hate that. That is the windows way, it means you have to press double-quote twice to get a double-quote. I am Swiss and use the US-International Layout with a modifier key. So 'Alt-Gr' + specific key gives you what you want, that is waaaay faster.
  20. This does not at any point list an advantage for the curved screen just for a bigger screen. Why do you want it to be curved? Are there any reasons except style? A little bit more screen size? Do you really use the curved part of the screen?
  21. Press&Hold a key actually works pretty good for Umlauts and other special symbol. But only If (and it is a big hard if) the time you have to hold it is configurable. I had a really hard time switching to android (from maemo) back than, because it wasn't configurable back than. It slowed typing down a lot. So if you go for Press&Hold for anything, it is a must for me to have it configurable. But would prefer modifier anyway, since it is independent from the OS!
  22. I would be in for an all black keyboard! (only half a joke would love it). But as far as a preprinted layout goes: Two Modifiers for a capital umlaut are normal for a Swiss layout, that is not the big problem here. But to put keys to the left side which are normally on the right, will give everybody a hard time getting used to it (I mean have you ever changed your keyboard layout? It takes an awful amount of time to get back to your old tipping speed. And you can believe me an all black keyboard does not help) I think it is a stupid idea to be creative here. There are a lot of "better"
  23. No that is just not true. Some people want that. But for me it is keyboard, battery and then price. I would rather not upgrade the hardware in this and then pay a grand on it. Most people do not need more power than that on a phone. And 5G is not even here yet. It will take at least another 2 years until it is worth getting a 5G phone (Probably another 10 years in the U.S. until the coverage is there). So that is the last point where more expensive hardware should be put in (at least in my opinion). But you are partially right. There is a tipping point. If the tech is too old, nobody is go
  24. Wow I am not that old... No honestly if somebody read this thread he might think that most modern phones have a curved screen which is not true. Most of the phones have a flat screen. And even on Samsungs flagship a lot of people would prefer a flat screen: - https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/87kd9a/would_you_buy_a_flatedged_galaxy_s9/?limit=1500. And here a general Poll to flat vs curved: - https://www.poll-maker.com/results2049800x31E0496d-56#tab-2 It is hard to get good data, but look at the Iphone, young people are buying these without curved screens. Real data of all so
  25. I think this is not that important at all. I think it is important to know how we could change the layout software-side. After 3 weeks it does not matter at all what is printed on the keyboard you won't need to look. But it is important to have YOUR layout! So the real question is, will there be any software support (without rooting) to change the keymaps as you please?
