$1000 AUD almost buys a Samsung S24 in Australia by the way, so it does hurt to have a non-functioning device that lacks features of even a 2016 flagship.

Comparing fxtec phone prices to huge company flagships has always been a weird one to me.

It is like comparing a mom and pops shop to a big market. Prices are higher as everything costs more for smaller quantities.

Not only that; the keyboard and its mechanics were both the phones' selling point and its major cost factor, not even the original Pro1 was ever supposed to be a "flagship" competitor in features or computing power back when it was created. It was "only" a better mid-range phone even back then. But honestly, even though it was more money for me than I ever spent on a phone or expected to spend on a phone back then, I was surprised how good a phone they packed in such a small-market device for that price.

Maybe you'll be able to sell yours at a good price and get a QWERTY one instead

Just an tiny remark on this @drcp – while it will probably be an option, the Pro1 X is also known to come with various connectivity problems which are a bit of a roulette game for each new device. If your Pro1 X has decent connectivity overall, swapping it for another Pro1 X may result in worse core usability. At least I wouldn't sell before I had received and checked the possible replacement.

  3. @raymo I fully agree to the 'practical use' comment. During my "active" time, trying to use it as a daily driver, with the specific Pro1X I still own, it was far away from anything like what most people would see as 'practical use', but for some time most of the basic phone stuff – in addition to the keyboard usage I bought it for – somehow worked – but only as long as I carried a small mobile router that gave me WiFi wherever I went, and with Voice over WiFi enabled to at least be able to do calls, however bad the voice connectivity was.

It seems each individual Pro1X was a surprise package, absolutely unlikely to fully work, but with no prediction possible to say in advance what might work and what might not, much of the possible faultiness due to the fragile antenna connectors that try to link the soldered antennas to the metal back cover.

It will still be interesting to see. if and when I get the one outstanding device, how it'll behave...

  4. @raymo Have you tried using a headset instead of the built-in mic? (I seem to remember this was one of the several suggestions back when the first Pro1X devices showed the problem, but I cannot remember whether they helped someone. When I was using the Pro1X, I also head some call quality problems.)

"Very soon" is a very flexible term coming from FxTec, but good to know they have it on the backburner. Better than nothing, I guess.

Agree to both of that. And waiting 5+ years for that phone has had one nice side effect – it has increased my patience 😉 (Getting a Pro1 and two Pro1 X from other sources in between did help there, of course; on the other hand, I haven't had an actually usable Fxtec phone for quite some time now.)

ordered a spare battery through the Indiegogo campaign and received nothing

Neither did I, but I explicitly told them to forget about the earphones they offered as a replacement as I have no use for them. Might just as well be that they've run out of the earphones, now, too...

Should I really get that phone *and* decide to keep it, I still have another, partly damaged Pro1X that I got earlier, so I could salvage its battery if must be. Otherwise, the thread @Hook linked to does seem promising.

Yay, original buyers from the website are getting officially ignored. Will try an e-mail again.

    I'm indiegogo contributor instead.

Just for the record, I had been told earlier that website orders would be shipped "at a leater date" (than Indigogo orders), and now I asked again with their Indiegogo orders reported as done, and I just got the answer "very soon I expect".

For Indiegogo backers who didn't get their device yet, I suspect only contacting support can help. But be patient, they can be really slow, and don't send "several emails"; their ticket system has been said to bump a case back to the end of the queue when a follow-up email comes in.

  9. Yes, it's Android 14 ("MagicOS 8.0"), and Android 15 based MagicOS 9.0 has been announced for November.

If it wasn't for either a hardware keyboard or a folder to make the lack of a hardware keyboard less annoying, I'd probably be using a Fairphone. They've an excellent track record for software support, too, and I neither need the fastest chips nor the most advanced cameras in a smartphone...

    • Thanks 1
  10. I'm totally with you. Until Fxtec's Pro1 came along, my limit was more like $500. Even if I like the Honor, I don't expect to pay that much for what effectively is just a phone any time soon. Let's hope it will last a few years. At least they promised Android upgrades for 4 years and security updates for 5 years...

  11. Samsung's own apps not working properly? Bummer... Oh, and thanks for reminding me of Unexpected Keyboard, I still need to try it out properly but haven't reinstalled it as of now...

Regarding the price of the Magic V2, it looks like I should have waited a bit longer. Now that the V3 has come out (which has, by the way, the few things the V2 was still lacking, like wireless charging or a proper telephoto camera), new V2s can be found for not much above 1,000 € (which still is more money than I ever wanted to part with for a phone, but I already said something like that when I ordered a Pro 1 back in 2019...).

I see that you've have Alt and Ctrl keys working on SwiftKey; I can't find them. Also, does SwiftKey have a Tab key?

Actually I've mostly been using Gboard since I got the phone back. Neither Gboard nor Swiftkey has control keys as far as I can see, though. Thankfully, apps like Termux add their own control key functionality, but that obviously doesn't help with normal text input in e-mail or web browsers. Which is why I've started to try Hacker's keyboard again, but that has other limitations I'm not sure I want to put up with after having used Swiftkey and the current version of Gboard...

  13. @jjvdgeer In addition to what @EskeRahn said, even if FinQuerty's selection of layouts doesn't include one that's good enough for you, for someone who knows how to use Android Studio it is fairly easy to clone FinQuerty and modify the layout that's already closest to what they want, to make it near-perfect. (I did that to fix the US Intl layout for the Pro1X.)

Also, if you use FinQwerty, I think you'll need to take care to not use a Pro1 layout on the Pro1X or vice versa, they're not fully compatible. By the way, are you sure yours is a Pro1? I have no knowledge of the Pro1 ever having come with a Scandinavian keyboard?

  14. That turned out well – they decided it was a warranty case and I got it back on Monday, repaired, like new, after about a month.

I'm already missing the physical keys again, though.

Still, compared to the Titan Slim, the big screen makes a huge difference. Because of that, it's much more than just a phone...

  15. @Mr.TvolaCZ, as of now, it seems there's still a slight chance to get the device delivered, see their latest update:

How a potential time frame will look also depends on whether you backed the phone on Indiegogo or ordered it from their website; the above info is for Indiegogo backers. I was told by them the remaining website orders would ship after those (so there's still a tiny bit of hope I might yet receive my 2019 Pro1 order, changed to Pro1X later, some day, as some devices have actually been shipped over the past few months, and so I've still not completely given up).

(I also keep in mind that even if I do get the phone after all, there's still the open question of how much of it will even work, with chances ranging from dim to nonexistent to get the device repaired or replaced at that point.)

Refund options also depend on whether it's Indiegogo, which would mean no, there is no such option, or a website order, in which case you might request a refund, but it might not happen. For website orders, depending on someone's country's rules and regulations, one might be able to apply for a refund through one's credit card company, though.

  16. I've forgotten how the state of LineageOS is on the Pro1 X in that regard, I never tried it, but if I might actually get the device that's still outstanding (I won't mess with the one I already have but doesn't work properly anyway at this point), I would be tempted – does it being "official" include the ability to make it pass SafetyNet attestation? (Also, does anyone know what Google's imminent transition from "SafetyNet attestation API" to "Play integrity API" might mean for us in this regard?)

THAT context, display issues in the corners should be ranked as "a minor cosmetic blemish".

the context is irrelevant, I would feel the same if this were the only issue

You don't understand. If this were "the only issue" (and the company hadn't been on the brink of folding for some time already, I didn't expect any of the 2024 devices to ship anymore at all) no one would scratch their head at your complaining. Context is everything.

What you're doing here is like complaining about a unique car with a special door construction (which is the one thing why it was made and why people were buying it) which in itself somehow works and looks good, but comes with half the expected engine power, in some cars one wheel does not turn, and the lights do not work properly, but you complain about a scratch on the windscreen.

  18. @Aeong – to be fair, the screen is not "defective", it's a minor cosmetic blemish, and all of us had to put up with it who needed to source a replacement screen outside of Fxtec, which was often the case. On the parts market, perfect replacement screens haven't been available at all now for a long time, and it seems that at this point not even Fxtec is capable to source any.

Your complaints on some of the other issues you mention are, of course, perfectly valid.

When I was still using my Pro1X which also had basic connectivity issues, practically inhibiting calls and text messages and mobile internet, I decided to carry a small mobile router with a second SIM card, getting internet through WiFi and enabling calls through Voice-over-WiFi. SMS was still a problem, though, which is not good when some services demand SMS as a second authentication factor.

By the way, just as a side note, my $2,000 Honor Magic V2 developed a similar display problem in use but the spots were slowly getting bigger, and it's now been in service for 1½ months and I haven't heard back from them, a status request wasn't answered, I don't even know yet whether it will be processed as a warranty case or not (if not, it may easily cost me $750), and Honor was nearing a two-digit billion dollar revenue already in 2016 (don't have current figures)...

    August/September Shipping Update

    silxmuynatv9s1j3ehmo.png

    Dear Pro1-X Backers,

We're happy to share another shipping update with you all. Here's the latest status of each wave:

    • Wave 1: A total of 182 tracking codes have been updated on Indiegogo.
    • Wave 2: A total of 67 tracking codes have been updated on Indiegogo.
    • Wave 3: A total of 226 tracking codes have been updated on Indiegogo.
    • Wave 4: A total of 101 tracking codes have been updated on Indiegogo and around 200 are left to complete the Wave.

    Accessories:

We also like to mention that we have started shipping the Accessories Bundles. However, we are no longer able to include the spare batteries in these shipments as they have been in storage for a while and may not perform optimally. Instead, we’ll be replacing these with Fxtec earphones with adjustable eartips.

    Alternative OS's:

We'd also like to remind you that since these devices were manufactured at a time when alternative OS's weren't ready, your Pro1-X will come with stock Android 11. As of now, there are several OS's that support Pro1-X and have detailed instructions for you to flash:

Please note, we recommend to back up all partitions of your device before flashing other OS's. Clicks here for more details.

    Tips:

As backers continue to receive their devices, we recommend reading through our previous update here. in case your phone is unable to boot up upon delivery, There is a simple workaround to fix this and requires a rubberband and some of your patience :).

For more information about your Pro1-X, check out our Fxtec commnuity forum, and if you’d like to connect with other backers and Pro1-X holders, join the unofficial Discord channel here.

Thank you for being a part of our journey.

    Warm regards,

  20. As I wrote a few weeks ago in the Honor Magic V2 thread, I went back to the Titan Slim because the Honor I had finally decided to buy had developed a display problem. Turns out that after using the big screen with an on-screen keyboard for some time, which surely was better than a normal phone, I like the Titan's keyboard more than did before. It's still a major nuisance that the app I'm typing in keeps being swapped into the background every time I inadvertently touch even just the border of the fingerprint sensor + home button, and it's still some nuisance that I don't get all characters I frequently need from the keys, and of course it's a tiny portrait orientation keyboard, not a full-width landscape orientation one, but otherwise I'm actually a little bit happier than used to be when I used the Slim before. Even though it must be something like ten times slower than the Honor... (As I have no information yet where the Honor's repair is going, I'll be continuing to use the Slim for how long it takes.)

  21. I was wrong about the ten days – it's "usually ten days for repair", after checking the device and deciding whether it's on warranty or not. Haven't heard back from them yet, after close to a month now (they received it on July 25), and I just sent the the repair service an e-mail...

They promise defect analysis (including the decision whether it's covered by warranty) within ten days after receiving the device, so I hope to get more information by the end of the week...
