  1. I like the new font. It’s easy to read and nice to look at – but only on my high DPI display. When I move it over to a regular one, it becomes blurry and difficult to read somewhat.

    High DPI:

So are you saying that I should upgrade my 43" 4K display to one that is at the least 8K to use this forum? Sounds like a really well chosen font then... *LOL*

But on a more serious note you sure got a point! If I ask FireFox to scale to 150%, the font looks decent. Though of course absurdly huge.

(An of course this does not work as a workaround for the other design issues)

  2. There’s some issues with the used font as well. The way the u and i are now smaller really, REALLY bugs me. It’s almost as if your eyes go up and down while reading a sentence. Same goes for the v, x and y. Here, have a look at this: aeiovgx

These 'fancy' fonts are not my cup of tea either. Sure they can be used for local effects like in a birthday invite, but for general texts.... YIKES! But I'm old, and to me Function is key....

  3. I was referring to this email exchange: https://www.fxtec.com/forums/topic/scandinavian-qwerty-please/page/3/#post-32480

The price for your already placed pre-order will not change, even if it’s unpaid. This will only affect new orders placed after 1 week. You can pay your existing pre-order anytime you are able to — there’s no time limit on that.”

So how do we translate that reply?

    1) Existing pre-orders will not have their price changed, even if it is unpaid.

    2) The price change will only affect orders placed after 1 week from when that email was sent.

    3) There is also no time limit on when you can pay for an existing pre-order.

So I guess the question is whether (2) means that “orders” placed before the 1 week price increase will be at the original price, or if “pre-orders” *and* “orders” placed before the 1 week price increase will be at the original price. I took it as the latter, but I can see how it could be taken as the former too. I was *assuming* that we are still in the pre-order state. Why? Because if you try to go through the process on the website “Shop”, it is called a “Pre-Order”, multiple times.

    1) F(x)tec PRO¹ Pre-order

    2) $693.65 This item will be released at a future date.

    3) Be one of the first to pre-order your Pro1 today.

    4) “Pre-Order Now” button

    After added to cart:

    5) Product listed as “F(x)tec PRO¹ Pre-order – QWERTY KEYBOARD, Black” and “Available: at a future date”

    6) TOTAL $704.34 charged at a future date (includes $45.34 MN State Tax)

After “Proceed to checkout” button is clicked:

    7) Number (5) duplicated.

    8) Number (6) duplicated

    9) “Place Pre-Order Now” button.

    :-)

Yeah, but it does not say that we can make new pre-orders. It only talks about "existing pre-orders" and "new orders".

But confusingly clicking Buy, they still call it "pre-orders", but as you only seem to be allowed to complete those with a pay (thus making it an order). I suspect it is simply a textual slip.

(I have already pointed out this to the staff, and I hope they will either allow for new pre-orders or change the texts)

  4. You know my story. Cancelled my preorder when they Said no Scandi. Now scandi will be available later on. Should I preproder again or wait since I can’t select scandi. Would be so much rasket if we had a scandi option.

I have also sent a mail indirectly about this. Let’s see what they reply today.

    .

    .

I wonder if they actually told us this:

@eskerahn: Can you contact them to let them know about the problem? They’ve told us that we can pre-order and hold that pre-order open, at the pre-order price, without placing a full order. I’m only buying QWERTY phones, but I would like to place a pre-order for a second phone at the pre-order price so that I have the option of completing the order after I’ve had a chance to use the first phone I ordered.

or it is just our own assumptions/deductions/hopes? I have tried to browse ttrough the comments and haven't found this.

What they HAVE told us is that we can hold already existing pre-order open, at the pre-order price, without placing a full order.

But if we can not make new pre-orders it means that those already paid can not go back and wait for a possible Scandinavian layout if they would like to, but would have to just cancel and buy for the new price IF a Scandinavian layout will become available.

I hope we can have an official comment on this.

  5. Something has changed with the colors. I’m sure it has to do with my own theme and laptop screen and all that, but I can *barely* see outlines around text boxes and such, I have to move my head up and down to try find and angle that can see the outlines in this sea of bright white. If it stays this way much longer I’m going to need a neck brace.

It seems those making the forum have forgotten that the slogan is "Function is key", and NOT "Design is key"...

I'm so sick and tired by this pest all over the computer world (not just here), that things has to be over-designed and under-productive.

It is all over, from colours hard to separate, lacking borders/separation, to over simplified icons completely loosing their original relation to the physical object they are supposed to represent...

The rubber stamp top right is a typical example, though it is slightly better than the sad Cyclop smliey used by MS....

    Cyclop

  6. @eskerahn: Can you contact them to let them know about the problem? They’ve told us that we can pre-order and hold that pre-order open, at the pre-order price, without placing a full order. .

    Yup, already escalated it. :)

  7. You cannot pre-order w/o paying now, although you can still order at the pre-order price if you’re ready to buy another now.

I think if you want to change a paid order back to a pre-order, you should contact fxtec directly, I doubt they’ll put a mechanism in place for you do it yourself, and cancelling your paid order now could cause even more complciations…. you’ve still got time to sort this out before they ship…

Please try again. I just did, as described above - but could be my privileges that (by a bug) allows me to do so.

  8. But as far as I understood the reply I got, if you just dont pay your pre-order now and wait until the SCANDI is released and then pay, you SHOULD get the SCANDI version for the pre-order price of 650 EUR. I think that is pretty clear in the replies I got. Or have I misinterpreted it?

That is how I read it too. Though IF the amount of interested is very low, they just MIGHT need to place a surcharge - that is just my guessing - but you would still be able to get the US or German at the pre-order price, that seems pretty clear.

  9. So as no clear answer is public, my advise for those wanting a Scandinavian keyboard badly would be to cancel their order, make a new pre-order and wait.

I have tried to take a new pre-order yesterday because of the discussion yesterday as I am thinking of buying another phone just in case my first one has problems and even for testing other systems while using my first Pro1 for daily tasks.

Like testing Sailfish while using another Pro1 as my primary phone.

Also, I know I will not buy another one if its price will increase mainly because 650 Eur is also really high price in my country and for me, I have never ever bought any phone such a high price.

So back to pre-order, I could not do this yesterday as it instantly wanted to request my bank card details. Today there is a new forum software which has a similar behaviour.

As the initial price is also high for me, I wanted to wait to receive the phone and try it before deciding to buy another device as a spare or other purposes.

So it seems I will not have the chance of having another device for spare and testing purposes… :(

Hmm, I just did a new pre-order. And it worked fine here, I just did not fill in the credit card info at the bottom.

Here https://www.fxtec.com/product/fxtec-pro1-pre-order/ I just clicked QWERTZ and "PreOrder Now", Then "Proceed to checkout" (Suggested address was OK).

And after ticking "I have read and agree to ..." I just clicked "Place Pre-Order Now".

  10. A few question arises from their mails:

    1) How do F(x)Tec plan to “…monitor demand for…” ?

    2) Will it be possible to send a US or German Pro1 and have it ‘upgraded’ to Scandinavian, and at approximately what cost? (With or without the existing keyboard returned as a spare)

    3) Will it be possible to put an already paid order back to a pre-order state, keeping the indiegogo coupon value?

I mean if a swap is not possible, or F(x)Tec will charge say €200 for a swap then people that want the Scandinavian layout badly better cancel their paid orders, make new pre-orders quickly at the same price and wait effectuating these to it is clear if a Scandinavian layout will ever come.

If it on the other hand is say $50, I for one would stick with my order and likely send it in for a swap if it ever becomes available.

ADD: Sent the above as an official support-mail requesting an answer that can be published.

I got a reply, but it explicitly request not to be published (apart from the same bottom disclaimer as the above)

So as no clear answer is public, my advise for those wanting a Scandinavian keyboard badly would be to cancel their order, make a new pre-order and wait.

  11. Great news everyone! I got permission to share the conversation I’ve had with the team from FxTec here with you guys. Since the conversation is both about the pre-order pricing and about the Scandinavian keyboard I will post this same message in both threads, so sorry for the spam.

This provides some very much needed information, and clears up a lot of things and misconceptions in regards to when and how we are supposed to pay and if a SCANDI keyboard is in works or not. Enjoy the read! :D

  12. I have now been updated that spare parts will be available at a later point in time after launch. This, of course, is in addition to the default repair option which we have with our authorised service providers. Established service providers are a requirement by most carrier networks and retailers before they can stock products of new smartphone manufacturers.

We will know more about this and available parts after launch. Likely, these will only be purchasable upon request through our Helpdesk.

I have, however, been assured that service parts are definitely going to be available :).

Please disregard previous statements on spare part availability – that isn’t quite the case – spare parts are coming after launch, while service providers will be available on launch.

    Erik

Phew! That was a relief!! (You really got some of us worried there). Thanks for clearing things up. :-D

(Allow me to suggest to go back and make strikeout-edits of the wrong parts, with a link to the correcting post 32458, for any future readers of the thread)

  13. Bummer, still moderation delay and no post previews or edits.

Although I realize order processing is way way way more important than the forum, I’d kinda hoped in the bank of my mind this downtime might be forum related.

Yeah, seems like cosmetics only, the functional issues moderating are still there ;-(

Other part of the site outside the forum has changed substantially though :-)

  14. Yes it does. It has to because it changes a lot. But it is on github https://github.com/tridactyl/tridactyl and does nothing evil with the permissions. Just a quick tutorial for you:

t to open a new tab. f to highlight links (and follow), gi go to first input (so a typical flow is tgoogle.com<cr>gu<searchterm>f).

But anyway thank you very much for testing!</searchterm></cr>

Pressing "t" does not do anything, but the G does go to end of page, so SOMETHING works. I haven't dug into what, just deactivated it, maybe I will play with it later.

  15. I don’t believe any major phone manufacturer would openly supply/sell service parts to the general public.

I think some of us hoped FxTec was a little different than ‘any major phone manufacturer’ and WOULD openly sell service parts to the general public.

Unfortunately, Craig, this will require an entirely different process – part stocking and supply to be put in place. While the general user would very much prefer a worry-free, simple “ship and return” repair option – which is also the standard within the industry. As we are a newly established manufacturer, it is important for us to provide efficacious, reliable and quick service, to ensure the long term support and sustainability of our products.

    Erik

EDIT: There were a misunderstanding here, they ARE going to offer spare parts, apart from the service. See the corrected statement here

Now that is REALLY bad news, and as others have said seems REALLY weird when Chen just yesterday(!) tweeted an image on how easy it is to take apart primarily with a screwdriver...

And as others have said, I'm not sure it is even legal to require people to send it for authorized service for repair - even aPple have trouble getting away with tricks like that. In my book this is a HUGE blow to my perception of the company. ;-(

SURE there could be some delay to get some parts, but you could simply let us (or independent repair shops) order them in advanced. Some parts I would like to buy from day one(!), and would not care if there were say three months of delivery time....

Especially the keyboard, the USB-pcb and the cable between the two parts, I do not expect to last ten years...

  16. For what I understand from what the birds say, that little nipple on the keyboard mat (at the closest to the user side) in the older prototypes is above a screw and it was necessary to take off the keyboard mat to get to that screw whereas on the newer ones that screw is not a thing somehow (can only guess at how the final version is implemented).

It does look like it would be possible to make the keyboard fairly easily replaceable if one could source the whole part of the phone where the keyboard is glued to, which holds not too many other things by the looks. Similar of how I’ve experienced replacing the screen in some phones (Lumia 730 is a particular one) where you can buy simply most of the frame of the phone with the screen attached and then transplant the boards etc there.

From he looks of the German keyboard it looks like the single screw in the middle is replaced by two at the sides, that are not beneath the keyboard.

Most of the things are not that likely to get worn, so the most interesting things as spares would be

    Key-mat, click-mat, the flex-cable and finally the usb-pcb

Assuming we can get the battery and display from alternative sources.

Note that even the 3.5mm jack seems to have it's own pcb too, so they really thought about service.

  17. A juicy picture was tweeted: https://twitter.com/chenliangchen/status/1163524008471605249

I mirrored the picture: here http://www.matland.be/pro1shots/pro1exploded.jpg

From the shape of the keyboard mat we can tell it’s an earlier prototype (credit to Noir for pointing this out).

    Looking beautiful I do think!

    Nice, thanks

I noticed the suction marks on the display, but again this is the old model, and I believe he somewhere wrote it will be (even) easier to get into the new one. :)

(the part next to the display is shown top down)

To my knowledge, the keyboard layouts will not be interchangeable.

I see now that Chen Liangchen from F(x)tec posted this tweet:

He could mean that different TYPES of keyboards are not interchangeable, that is that US and German can not just be interchanged on the same device. Would be odd though. Or he could mean that they are not USER-intechangeable (That is: it would break warranty), and from his next post I assume that was what he meant.

Personally I would still like to have a few keyboards as spares, warranty or not....

  19. Of course this is all semantics. But if I am planning to do something, that means I intend to do it. Of course plans can change, but if I have something planned, that usually means I don’t make other plans that contradict those plans without canceling the first plan. Bahahhaa.

As not a native English speaker, I'm not into the finer details.

But in my vocabulary there is a clear difference between "I'm going to the party" and "I'm planing to go to the party", in the later case that could be pending a broken car getting repaired in time. So "intend" yes, but being aware of obstacles that might prevent it.

  20. For the screen brightness?.

    Yeah

    Look at this

And after that look here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4038456/ or here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4038456/

I tried to do a simple pencil-test (flipping a pencil quickly) at different levels of brightness, and it could look like they are using PWM.

The display is a Boe BF060Y8M-AJ0-7702 if you want to dig deeper. It is also used on the Elephone U Pro.

  21. 1. Should we understand, that the will not be able to replace the worn-out keys?

    2. If not, maybe You could say the number (not the exact amount of course) how much buttons have to be ordered? I’m sure that just the buttons are not so expensive (how much can it cost, 5€? 10€?) and some users would LOVE to order 1 or 2 pieces just in case if their keyboard wears out. I’m considering myself ordering some spare parts as for example 2 spare batteries, 1 spare screen, 2 or 3 flex tapes, one full spare keyboard – just in case if FxTec disappears from the market after a few months (nobody would like that, but let’s be honest, it can happen and nobody wants another paperweight just because the support for the 650€ device died after a year due to lack of orders).

The display we know is a 'standard' part from Boe, also used on the Elephone U, so that should be reasonably available.

We do not know the battery, but I can not imagine why that should not be a standard item too.

But the keyboard I too would like some spares, as I have no idea if it is going to be ten years before the next keyboard slider comes out...

  22. Indeed, that is what we’re planning, Eske. However, as mentioned several times, a “plan” does not reflect a schedule or a guarantee. This is still very much a subject to the demand we receive for the specific keyboard layout.

And just to confirm again, while we are planning to have a Scandinavian keyboard layout, and we’re working on designing it, this might not realise if the demand for it is too low in comparison to QWERTZ and QWERTY. In any case, Scandinavian layouts wouldn’t be announced before the first batch of QWERTY and QWERTZ devices are shipped.

    Erik

Thanks for the clarification, so a simple, though very unfortunate, grammatical error in the letter, that lead some of us to assume that it was decided, and not just planned. Too bad, but errors happens.

Do you have an estimated price for a keyboard bought later? And can we change it ourselves without breaking warranty? Will it require special tools like a heat-gun, or just screws?

This info really matters to people if they want to buy the device now, and change the keyboard to a Scandinavian one later if it becomes available, or they will have to wait and see if it becomes available before actualising their pre-orders.

If it WILL break warranty, is it possible to put already paid orders on hold, and not have it completed before it is decided what keyboards will be produced. I for one might consider that.
