DIY battery replacement options?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

My battery capacity's much lower than it used to be 2-3 years ago.

Figure it'd be nice to replace but haven't been able to track down a replacement.

Maybe something like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003209067066.html

Or from Alibaba they seem to be like 3$ each if we'd order a couple of them as a group:

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Battery-Standard-Gb-31241-2014-gb_300015359755.html

Hoping to get some help as this isn't my area of expertise at all, and I wasn't able to get a clear picture/dimensions of the battery and its connector.

Addendum: latest info says we are looking at approximately 11cm by 3.6cm dimensions and the connector has a label of FH-F88003B-FPC.

The big question is if we can just move over the electronics part and the ribbon cable from an old one, even if it fits inside???

I guess we should be pretty sure that a new is of same physical composition and has at the least the same capacity as the original, so the electronics will not try to overcharge it - dependent on how dumb/clever the small circuitry between the cells and the phone is....

Anyone knows anything on this? Maybe from FxTec? @Casey can you help with some info here?

I've been recently looking into this myself given the deterioration of the battery (currently approx. 73% health 😬) and having checked the FCC filings (can be found at https://fccid.io/2AUCLQX1000/Internal-Photos/internal-Photos-4458173) you can see that the battery dimensions are roughly 110mm x 36mm.

The connector also has labeling on it (FH-F88003B-FPC) although not sure if this is a specification or unique to the cable that's used in the filing.

In addition I've contacted Cellonic (https://www.cellonic.eu/) as a long shot, to see if they either already stock a battery of the same spec/dimensions/connector or would be willing to produce one.

Wiko WIM - no FCC filing photos that I can find, but a screenshot from a tear-down video produces a ratio of 405px : 653px (battery height : device height) and applying that to the official height of the device of 156mm gives a battery height of 96mm, so not a match.

Not as clear because of lack of measurement in photos, however taking a ratio of 350px : 571px (battery height : device height) and applying that to the official height of the device of 149mm gives a battery height of 91mm, so not a match.

Sorry to rain on your parade @Adrienspawn , just don't want you to waste your time going down rabbit holes. It's a very frustrating process to find batteries that might already be in existence for this phone!

I am also interested in this. I tried to get a replacement from the IGG campaign but it seems that it will never be delivered.

Note that FxTec told that the batteries are not interchangeable between the two models.... :classic_sad:

Just to let you know, we have Pro1 spare batteries in stock at our office. If you'd like to purchase one, please get in touch with us at [email protected].

@Casey a couple of things:

  • It would appear that there may be users who have requested a battery via the IGG campaign for a Pro1 - if there is a stock of them should they not be being fulfilled?
  • What would the price of a new battery be? I understand that shipping will be dependent on location (I'm in the UK)

Thanks

We have fulfilled some of the battery purchases on IGG. We previously announced already that the battery listed on IGG is NOT compatible with Pro1, and have asked those who ordered for the Pro1 battery on IGG to contact us. We can't do anything about those who didn't contact us.

It is £99 + shipping. Shipping is calculated on a case by case basis.

@Adrienspawn I've spent the day re-looking at all phones within the 3100-3200mAh range listed on GSMArena Phone Finder to see if there are any compatible batteries from other phones and I'm afraid I've not found any.

Attached is a list of the phones that I've looked at. Edit: made since 2017.

A lesser battery height is fine though. Higher would be bad. So they would all fit vertically and then the other aspect is the width/depth.

Thanks for getting the maximum dimensions of 11cm x 3.6cm. Definitely a good place to start aside from the actual connection. The rest is just lithium which we could potentially cram 4000mah given the smaller sizes being identical to our larger batteries. I'll update the OP with your dimensions and the connector labelling.

Indeed, would need to find a battery narrower than 36mm though, not many vendors list dimension sizes of the battery itself.

I've also had a quick look back through the FCC filing images, and attached I've highlighted the connector terminal on the board, no markings that I could see but perhaps it might be identifiable at some point?

Looks to be a (the?) standard rectangle that snaps into place with 4 terminals for positive, negative, temperature and capacity.

Seeing it in some iPhone repair videos and then most batteries (ie for Pixel) have what looks to be the part that snaps into it.

As we have seen there is 'something' on the battery/end of the cable, I have no idea what that circuitry actually is, but it means the lithium calls are not just directly connected to the board, so what ever it is have to be mimic by a DIY solution
we can glimpse it at the FCC image also

Will be doing another search for stand-ins when I have more time.

Yeah, but we do NOT know if there are any circuitry between the cable and the battery cells. We would need some close ups, or even disassembled batteries...
But sure we could be lucky that there are only connecting wires between the plug and the cells.

I am still waiting to hear back regarding my request for a replacement battery.
I sent in my address and phone # for a shipping quote and no one has responded yet.

Hey all, coming from this thread:

I'm happy to help and sacrifice my battery if need be. I'm not sure I follow this question though, as an electronics dabbler. When you say "between the plug and cable", what does this mean? Happy to cut the ribbon cable or unwrap the cells if this is useful (and helps me get a replacement battery from AliExpress :classic_laugh:).

My bad wording.... sorry,  What I meant was if there are any circuitry between the plug and the cable going into the cells.

Can you see or fell any 'chip', or is it just the wires that goes directly from the plug?

IF there are some sort of circuitry, we will need to mimic that if we try with a different battery. If we are lucky all the circuitry is on the board.
