  1. My contribution ID is 1102 and my status on the indiegogo campaign “Fulfilled”. I have not received my coupon. I have wrote about this on [email protected], but not gave any feedback. Spam folder is empty

    Please resend.

    Thank you

I can see it was resent. :)

BUT If you still do not get it, you might want to check if you are using an email provider that has a filter where it can get caught, before your local email program ever have a chance of seeing it as real/spam. My email-provider uses a system called "SpamTitan", and ocasionally I experience that the filter have been overzealous and caught real emails in it's quarantine.

  2. I think also it will be a fairly niche product, and maybe some non-keyboard-addicts would still be willing to get their feet wet at the set price after reviews show it off and fxtec becomes somewhat more known. I’m glad that they went for a somewhat high-end phone rather than giving us cheap hardware at a cheap price… I doubt they could manage the same hardware for a cheaper price, looking at prices of other similarly specced devices. And as for people like me and eskerahn… I think we both are just itching to get rid of the some money and get our hands on this device as it’s the only option in a category.

Agree. Just like the BB Priv that was also 'overpriced for the rest of the specs', I still bought it.

The Moto Z series similarly, if you just look at specs, severely overpriced. But had the Keyboard Mod been realised I planned to buy a Z-series device for it, despite the overprice. (And yes, that way around, a device for the keyboard, not a keyboard for the device!)

(And before the Priv, I bought some different Keyboards for Iphones, and then an Iphone for them - but HATED Ios)

  3. I’ll be honest, for a new company at first I thought the price was ok, but I’m starting to get a little less forgiving now. Nearly all manufacturers have released new phones over the past 6 months, some getting discounts shortly after release. I doubt this phone will drop in price after release. It’s a tough pill to swallow when you’re asking 700 for a new phone. I’ve never spent so much on a device before. Always bought pre-owned handsets or handsets on sale.

I know development costs are not cheap and they need to make money but I think the price will scare many away. Same thing happened to the blackberry priv. It was too overpriced and it died out fast in a firesale.

Keep in mind this phone has to go beyond niche markets to do well.

The average consumer is not going to spend 700 for a new phone from a new manufacturer they’ve never heard of when household brands are pumping out reliable phones that have been perfected over the years for the same or less. The lower the price, the more a consumer may be willing to go out on a limb and try it for the keyboard novelty.

I hate to sound negative but I’m trying to paint a reality check. I want this device to succeed. I want keyboards to come back. I want them to make another. But the odds are stacked against them.

If they proceed with the proposed price, the only way out is overwhelmingly positive reviews. And the device has to be perfect. I’m not kidding when I say PERFECT.

First of it is 650 and not 700, but that is almost splitting sticks.

But seen from my perspective this IS a niche product, and will never be a 'mass product' selling millions (I would love to be proven wrong though...)

In my view it simply is a limited segment that type that much that they can see the benefits of a real keyboard over the software substitutes. AND even if they do see it, there is a trade of in size and weight that have to be considered. So for those that type sms, email, browses etc with a mean of say 100-200 strokes a day, and use their device primarily for calling and e.g. images, well then the touch phablets or phones out there would most likely be the better suited for their usage pattern. And even some intensive 'typers' would insist on portrait, and some will not accept the larger device of a physical keyboard. And even a good chunk of real keyboard lovers prefer a keyboard in the wrong direction (just browse a bit on crackberry)...

Sure a lower price would always attract more buyers, but even if it was sold at the material cost price (what ever that is), ignoring all development, software, marketing and investments costs it would still be a niche product.

But I would agree with you that the price matters. Had it been much cheaper I would most likely have bought several, simply to have as spares, now I think I will limit my self to two or three.... I have been crying for something like this for almost ten years, and who knows if they will make a pro2, or it will be another ten years.... I would just hate the risk of NOT having bought enough to last...

  4. The change from Thursday to Tuesday messed with the plan =(

I’m landing in London late Wednesday.

At my current position, I’m frequently traveling to different places. At this time it was a little bit of work to arrange.

    Tough luck, too bad ;(

  5. After my Galaxy S Relay got far too slow, I switched to a pixel1 and keyboard. I used the iphone keyboard in the image above,

Interesting that you got an Iphone keyboard to work with android, that failed on my attempts.

The type of keyboard you used looks like similar to the ones I played with, so maybe Samsung had some smart trick to work with Iphone keyboards? I do not quite recall what phones I attempted to connect to. It was my own SonyEricsson (Neo) Pro, but also some of my friends devices at the time.

  6. This shifted thing is useless.

I think that part is pushing it a bit.

For those writing in languages with A-Z only, and that do not use numbers much, (or always look at the print of the keys anyway), the shifted layout might be beneficial. with a better balance in the strech from right and left. I'm not in that target group either though...

So despite never writing in German (I hardly speak it), I will most likely go for the German unshifted QWERTZ layout, as I can easily ignore that the Y-key got a Z printed and vice versa. And similar for the national letter keys, that are different in Danish

So if not enough support for Hungarian, I will suggest you to do the same, as the German QWERTZ does not look that far from the Hungarian. :)

PS As advocated earlier I would strongly suggest that the shifted keyboard should have the number keys following the letter keys, so it would 'only' be at the sides things are a bit odd, but the main part was positioned normally relative to each other. That is: Shift ALL four top rows or shift NONE.

  7. I’ve always wanted to get one of those iphone keypads and just glue it onto a case for my phone but for whatever reason that never happened

I experimented a bit, and as I tried it I could get the keyboards available for Android to work quite well on Ios devices, but not the other way round!

They REGISTER fine by bluetooth, but keystrokes are ignored. I have tried at least five different models.

You can see a little blah blah on those I wrote here a couple of years ago.

  8. Thanks for the nice post edlinfan. And nice tinkering.

I tinkered something for Iphone 6- my self that worked well, had it not been for the horrors of Ios, I might still have been using it....

I can confirm that the pro1 indeed offers an option to have it in landscape while open :)

And Alt-Tab and Alt-Sh+Tab is supported too (The last triple-combo hard to do hand-held though)

I see no reasons why Home/End could not be assigned to a combo. Could be the yellow-arrow plus some arrow key.

Frankly I never even tried the pane functionality, imho even these huge 6" screens are too small for splitting. But sure there could be apps where it makes sense. So thus have no idea if there are any handy shortcuts. But if they are in the Android API, I see no reasons why they could not be assigned a key-combo. (To be honest I did not even know how to turn panes on, had to google it...)

I can go ONE way, from the split app TO the rest with Alt+Tab

I tried with various combinations of the modifier keys and arrows/tab - if the return jump is there I did not guess it...

  9. Not sure if it’s an issue. It also grabs some(lower) angle on the iPhone, and the material is quite flexible.

Edit: I got one in front of me.

Might work, my point was that the edge needed to get a grip, could be in the way for the sliding when opening, and it almost certainly would limit the options of opening to push-only, as it would by hard to get a grip on the top part for lifting of the back edge...

  10. 700 dollar phone and a cheap plastic case for it to rest in? Throw it in a zip up Thule or send a leather sleeve. A clear plastic case takes away from the class of a qwerty keyboard and is bad for other people taking a look at your phone – with this phone they will be. Develop a case worthy of the qwerty comeback – I’m one of the few who held out buying droid 1, 2, 3 , 4 then buying the 4 and 3 several times before opting for the Keyone. The blackberry is a garbage phone and I’m up for a replacement this year I have high hopes for this product and a dope case to come with the pre-order is what I’m looking for.

I guess the difference between $649 and your $700 could cover a more exclusive case. I hope there will be one available as an accessory.

  11. I still haven’t heard anything on water resistance or warranty. Does anybody have info on that?

It has been said at several places that this does not have an IP-rating.

I do not know any particulars on the warranty, but for those in the EU (assuming UK is still in in July), there are law bound warranty. But I hope someone from the company can tell you more.

  12. I was wondering, how many Czech people are here, looking forward to a qwertz version? Just came on my mind we have several specific letters too (eg. Žščřúůáíý etc.), but I am assured that we are a weak community. So how many we are here?

I'm quite confident that all these characters will be available software-wise, when Czech is selected - no matter the print on the keys.

I have already started on a little pc tool for customization, though I still lack the info on what files are used and the format of those. But I hope for complete flexibility, and sharing of layouts, so even the smallest minority can fit them for their own preferences, using the print that is closest as a base. E.g. The German QWERTZ would be quite close to the Scandinavian, so even if Scandinavian print is not made....

I do not not know enough on android to know if it will be possible to 'piggy-bag' on GBoard's dictionaries and spell-checking, but I hope so.

  13. So we can see that after US/UK QWERTY and German QWERTZ layouts, the next preferences are Scandinavian and Russian layouts.

Remember also that Scan can easily substitute Den, as the difference is just additional print that needs to be ignored on two keys for Danes.

And as suggested earlier a large portion of those wanting US/UK are likely to have never even bothered with this thread, and thus did not vote.

  14. I have another question, what’s the max brightness in nits of the display?

I have tried to Google for some brightness on the "Elephone U Pro" that uses the same display, but not found any numbers.

But a subjective compare of the S8- and the (pre-production) Pro¹ (both cranked up to full brightness and no blue filter or the like), the Pro¹ is clearly brighter.

ADD: Tried to put them at auto and shine a bright led torch at the sensors of both (placed head-to-head) and here my impression were that they were of about equal brightness. (The S8- is known to go for a higher brightness in auto, than if you just pull the bar to 100%, the Pro¹ does not do that. If you crank it to 100%, it do not care about the sensor)

  15. You can even lift it from the table in the top half, and push the bottom half ‘away’ opening it while doing it…

Eske, what phone you are using? Wow, you did not find out earlier?? easyyyy, that is perfect for one hand opening :-D :-D Using it quite often!! :-D

He he, haven't had a real tilt slider since the N97mini ten years ago.... (Gave that up for the Xperia Neo Pro, as N97mini only works in the dark...)

  16. Indeed, still using this feature at my Nokia E7, but I guess when there is a fingerprint sensor at the side, you will reach it with your tip finger every time when you turn the phone 90° (what you have to do always when wanna to slide it) and at that moment the pin is not needed any more, because when sliding the keyboard, you can already unlock the phone only by holding it in the correct direction and with tip finger on the scanner, am I correct?

    You are correct. :)

The keyboard open does trigger just as pressing power, so if the device is not locked, it is active when opened.

If locked, it is just touching the scanner with the right index (or middle) finger after opening.

I feel it natural to hold the index finger at the 'support plate', that is between the two 'halves', which is close to the sensor, for easy access.

I think it is a matter of 'muscle memory' to find the ideal way to pick it up, slide open and unlock in one sweep (almost unconscious) movement.

BTW I noticed an alternative way of opening it(!), Rather than pushing the front edge, you can lift the back edge. That is ideal for a discrete opening, e.g. during a meeting, where the cool clang would draw attention.

You can even lift it from the table in the top half, and push the bottom half 'away' opening it while doing it...

  17. On 4) I do not know if there will be some official ones, but I think it MIGHT be possible to cut a protector for the S8+ or S9+ as these are slightly longer, but looks to have a fairly similar edge-design, and they are 73.4 resp. 73.8mm versus the 73.6mm of the Pro¹

That will be one of the very first things I will try to do when I get my hands on one.

(I already ordered some tempered glass protectors for the two models and a glass cutter….)

The cutting failed miserably, but protectors for the Elephone U Pro with the same front exists.
