  1. I see there’s a screenprotector being used. Not entirely fitting, but I guess it works good enough. Does it impair the front camera?

The one I found here is a fairly mediocre fit, to put it mildly. I have not (yet) found tempered glass protectors with fitting curvature, just flat ones (and this even got a common cut out in the top for camera etc). There are various plastic ones with curvature, I have not tried these, as I wanted nothing less than tempered glass on this this hard to get specimen. Once it goes into real production, I might settle for less, and just buy a spare screen , for the bad chance of a plastic protector not doing the trick.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of Gorilla glass. It is a GREAT compromise if you do NOT use a protector, but I prefer a more elastic material, and then have a simple film of top for all the scratches that you replace regularly (e.g. monthly) when it gets too scratched.

As gorilla glass is hard to scratch, this means that it is also brittle. For other Gorilla glass devices I have used a tempered glass protector (cheap) and they have saved my real screen several time, taking the force of the impact when dropped. They usually cost £1-4 and I replace them about every two months, as some corner of it breaks. Or after a real impact of course. So got a pile in stock. (Though I have had one on my Priv with a broken corner for almost a year - I'm just being too lazy to swap it, as the Priv is no longer a daily driver....)

  2. Will Pro1 support Polish letters?

    Ą ą = Alt+A

    Ć ć = Alt+C

    Ę ę = Alt+E

    Ł ł = Alt+L

    Ń ń = Alt+N

    Ó ó = Alt+Ó

    Ś ś = Alt+S

    Ż ż = Alt+Z

    Ź ź = Alt+X

If I have my way, there will be no practical limits to what chars will be supported (well unicode accepted by Android). And my plan is that they can be assigned to any key or key-combination within some reasonable limits. (Zero or more modifier-keys plus some normal keys)

So any language using letters with individual unicode chars should be easy to map as wished.

To the extent Android supports it, it could even be taken a step further and supporting partial 'glyphs' or diacritics that can be used to combine chars from multi strokes. Either diacritics/modifiers pressed before or after, depending on the unicode element. As long at it is addressable, and Android supports the combining, I see no reasons to it being limited from the keyboard-end.

  3. The only app I’ve ever had problems with is Netflix and that is easily solved by installing an older version which I keep the apk for and reinstall whenever I slip up and let an update through. Netflix never objects to the older program being used. /quote]

You might have to share the apk in a few weeks…

And please add over here, if there is a specific version that works well with Keyboards/Landscape - and how to get to it.

    https://www.fxtec.com/forums/topic/apps-that-works-great-with-a-real-keyboard-and-in-landscape/

It is an annoying 'feature' in the Android Market, that once something have been messed up with an 'update', we not only can not downgrade, we even can't uninstall and install the working older version. We have to either hope the developer fixes what they messed up or find and side-load it, thus messing with the whole idea of (at the least somewhat) secured apps.

  4. Wow, that is huge! Thanks for the comparison picture! Also have E7 so it is perfect to see that :) Don’t you have also a picture when closed? Pro1 vs E7?

Just made a few quick ones with a samsung, not sharp, but you can see the size...

  5. I think at this point this information is useless.

We have to be realistic here. If the phone is a financial disaster, support will vanish really fast.

Spare parts will not be as bad, since they seem to use a lot of standard-parts.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be easy to dis-/assemble it (would have been great if they used the shiftphone approach).

On the software-side things could end really fast. But the open bootloader will enable us to use an OS that gets updated.

I think that is a fair estimate of the worst-case scenario.

We will have to wait and see on the repairability. At the least I see some screws, in both halves, so might not be as bad after all :)

  6. Clicking this link, I get the “Home/User” page, the “&um_action=edit” simply disappears from the URL. It’s the page I earlier posted a screenshot of where the “edit profile” is supposed to appear:

Thanks for testing. I had (optimistically) hoped that it was just the menu item that under some unknown circumstances were missing, but must be worse than that then.

    Hmm, :-/

Maybe different 'create-paths' of the user create the profile with different rights to their own profile??

Let us hope some more knowledgeable person knows what is going on and can fix it..

  7. It depends a bit on what you mean by "google apps", as all the Android system apps in principle are Google apps.

But I assume you mean stuff like their maps, mails, drive, photos, youtube, chrome and many others, and YES you can disable these (even without the need to use ADB from a PC - that is a big axe for non rooted devices)

And remember that if not enough, they also promised that it is rootable, so that allows you to do practically anything. :)

PS Also remember that due to a really odd Android thing, you have to explicitly stop a running app you have disabled, otherwise it will continue to run - yes seriously....

  8. If it will be with curved or not curved screen doesn´t matter. BUT WHO NEEDS 6″ screen when it has slider keyboard?

Many people use they phones on constructions/factories or working outdoors and there is smaller – better.

    I will pay 800-900€ for pro1 with 4,5″

    please, make one for me.

I am still waiting for new version of photon Q, yeah pro1 will be great choice but I won´t buy it because 6″ is too much to carry with on constructions

There has been a discussion on the size much earlier in the thread, so moved your comment here.

I too hope for a Pro2 of lesser size. If the Pro1 gets a big (excuse the pun) success, we will have a higher chance of later variants also. I'm quite sure they thought long on what size that would would suit the most users, and that is where they have chosen to start.

  9. The Samsung Galaxy S Relay was the last good keyboarded android, so I didn’t use that with this keyboard. Sorry actually I did as I tested before I got the pixel. But basically I wanted a top of the range phone (this was ~2 years ago) so I used the Google pixel (apparently htc). This is nothing more than basic BT HID I don’t see why you’d have any problem with any keyboard unless there are some weird bespoke iPhone keyboards out there.

It was actually pretty sweet for a while but the mechanism just grew too wobbly over a couple of months each time eventually being too risky to keep attached to the phone.

Listing ended but it was this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apple-Wireless-Bluetooth-Slide-Out-Keyboard-Mini-Case-Cover-For-iPhone-5-5S-SE-/311722685830?var=&hash=item48941eb586:m:mcai0aiKEcfOHDvWPH3ZeMg

    I have one spare left

Just tried to pair the Pro1 with an old Iphone BT keyboard I dug up, and look and behold it worked!! (Not that it makes much sense though)

So why it did NOT work with the Android phones I tried earlier I do not know....

ADD The same old thing also worked on my Samsung S8- , so all points to the problems I have seen no longer exists??

  10. What do you mean? The specs of this phone can be found in other handsets for nearly half the price. I think the reason their price is higher is due to development costs and volume, or lack of volume rather

One very very crucial detail is missing in this spec-compare: The keyboard.... And not just a fixed keyboard but a sliding landscape one!!!

One thing is the price of the keyboard and the development of it alone, like say a BB Key½, but we should also remember that logically 'splitting' a standard phone in halves, keeping it well balanced is not an easy thing! This is not just a keyboard 'drawer' tugged underneath a phone, it is more like a screen and some other components cut out of the unit and moved to the second half. And this has to be done with a strategically placed cable that is placed so it is not exposed to accidental damage.

And apart from the extra and non standard components, remember that all the development costs of this has to be distributed over a rather limited number of devices.

It is not like Samsung/aPple where every million spent rises the price per unit with less than a dollar.

So that F(x)tec are able to set a price for this similar to the much much simpler Key1/Key2 I find really impressive.

But SURE as everyone else I would love things to be cheaper, but please, we have to be realistic.

  11. My contribution ID is 1102 and my status on the indiegogo campaign “Fulfilled”. I have not received my coupon. I have wrote about this on [email protected], but not gave any feedback. Spam folder is empty

    Please resend.

    Thank you

I can see it was resent. :)

BUT If you still do not get it, you might want to check if you are using an email provider that has a filter where it can get caught, before your local email program ever have a chance of seeing it as real/spam. My email-provider uses a system called "SpamTitan", and ocasionally I experience that the filter have been overzealous and caught real emails in it's quarantine.

  12. I think also it will be a fairly niche product, and maybe some non-keyboard-addicts would still be willing to get their feet wet at the set price after reviews show it off and fxtec becomes somewhat more known. I’m glad that they went for a somewhat high-end phone rather than giving us cheap hardware at a cheap price… I doubt they could manage the same hardware for a cheaper price, looking at prices of other similarly specced devices. And as for people like me and eskerahn… I think we both are just itching to get rid of the some money and get our hands on this device as it’s the only option in a category.

Agree. Just like the BB Priv that was also 'overpriced for the rest of the specs', I still bought it.

The Moto Z series similarly, if you just look at specs, severely overpriced. But had the Keyboard Mod been realised I planned to buy a Z-series device for it, despite the overprice. (And yes, that way around, a device for the keyboard, not a keyboard for the device!)

(And before the Priv, I bought some different Keyboards for Iphones, and then an Iphone for them - but HATED Ios)

  13. I’ll be honest, for a new company at first I thought the price was ok, but I’m starting to get a little less forgiving now. Nearly all manufacturers have released new phones over the past 6 months, some getting discounts shortly after release. I doubt this phone will drop in price after release. It’s a tough pill to swallow when you’re asking 700 for a new phone. I’ve never spent so much on a device before. Always bought pre-owned handsets or handsets on sale.

I know development costs are not cheap and they need to make money but I think the price will scare many away. Same thing happened to the blackberry priv. It was too overpriced and it died out fast in a firesale.

Keep in mind this phone has to go beyond niche markets to do well.

The average consumer is not going to spend 700 for a new phone from a new manufacturer they’ve never heard of when household brands are pumping out reliable phones that have been perfected over the years for the same or less. The lower the price, the more a consumer may be willing to go out on a limb and try it for the keyboard novelty.

I hate to sound negative but I’m trying to paint a reality check. I want this device to succeed. I want keyboards to come back. I want them to make another. But the odds are stacked against them.

If they proceed with the proposed price, the only way out is overwhelmingly positive reviews. And the device has to be perfect. I’m not kidding when I say PERFECT.

First of it is 650 and not 700, but that is almost splitting sticks.

But seen from my perspective this IS a niche product, and will never be a 'mass product' selling millions (I would love to be proven wrong though...)

In my view it simply is a limited segment that type that much that they can see the benefits of a real keyboard over the software substitutes. AND even if they do see it, there is a trade of in size and weight that have to be considered. So for those that type sms, email, browses etc with a mean of say 100-200 strokes a day, and use their device primarily for calling and e.g. images, well then the touch phablets or phones out there would most likely be the better suited for their usage pattern. And even some intensive 'typers' would insist on portrait, and some will not accept the larger device of a physical keyboard. And even a good chunk of real keyboard lovers prefer a keyboard in the wrong direction (just browse a bit on crackberry)...

Sure a lower price would always attract more buyers, but even if it was sold at the material cost price (what ever that is), ignoring all development, software, marketing and investments costs it would still be a niche product.

But I would agree with you that the price matters. Had it been much cheaper I would most likely have bought several, simply to have as spares, now I think I will limit my self to two or three.... I have been crying for something like this for almost ten years, and who knows if they will make a pro2, or it will be another ten years.... I would just hate the risk of NOT having bought enough to last...

  14. The change from Thursday to Tuesday messed with the plan =(

I’m landing in London late Wednesday.

At my current position, I’m frequently traveling to different places. At this time it was a little bit of work to arrange.

    Tough luck, too bad ;(

  15. After my Galaxy S Relay got far too slow, I switched to a pixel1 and keyboard. I used the iphone keyboard in the image above,

Interesting that you got an Iphone keyboard to work with android, that failed on my attempts.

The type of keyboard you used looks like similar to the ones I played with, so maybe Samsung had some smart trick to work with Iphone keyboards? I do not quite recall what phones I attempted to connect to. It was my own SonyEricsson (Neo) Pro, but also some of my friends devices at the time.

  16. This shifted thing is useless.

I think that part is pushing it a bit.

For those writing in languages with A-Z only, and that do not use numbers much, (or always look at the print of the keys anyway), the shifted layout might be beneficial. with a better balance in the strech from right and left. I'm not in that target group either though...

So despite never writing in German (I hardly speak it), I will most likely go for the German unshifted QWERTZ layout, as I can easily ignore that the Y-key got a Z printed and vice versa. And similar for the national letter keys, that are different in Danish

So if not enough support for Hungarian, I will suggest you to do the same, as the German QWERTZ does not look that far from the Hungarian. :)

PS As advocated earlier I would strongly suggest that the shifted keyboard should have the number keys following the letter keys, so it would 'only' be at the sides things are a bit odd, but the main part was positioned normally relative to each other. That is: Shift ALL four top rows or shift NONE.

  17. I’ve always wanted to get one of those iphone keypads and just glue it onto a case for my phone but for whatever reason that never happened

I experimented a bit, and as I tried it I could get the keyboards available for Android to work quite well on Ios devices, but not the other way round!

They REGISTER fine by bluetooth, but keystrokes are ignored. I have tried at least five different models.

You can see a little blah blah on those I wrote here a couple of years ago.

  18. Thanks for the nice post edlinfan. And nice tinkering.

I tinkered something for Iphone 6- my self that worked well, had it not been for the horrors of Ios, I might still have been using it....

I can confirm that the pro1 indeed offers an option to have it in landscape while open :)

And Alt-Tab and Alt-Sh+Tab is supported too (The last triple-combo hard to do hand-held though)

I see no reasons why Home/End could not be assigned to a combo. Could be the yellow-arrow plus some arrow key.

Frankly I never even tried the pane functionality, imho even these huge 6" screens are too small for splitting. But sure there could be apps where it makes sense. So thus have no idea if there are any handy shortcuts. But if they are in the Android API, I see no reasons why they could not be assigned a key-combo. (To be honest I did not even know how to turn panes on, had to google it...)

I can go ONE way, from the split app TO the rest with Alt+Tab

I tried with various combinations of the modifier keys and arrows/tab - if the return jump is there I did not guess it...

  19. Not sure if it’s an issue. It also grabs some(lower) angle on the iPhone, and the material is quite flexible.

Edit: I got one in front of me.

Might work, my point was that the edge needed to get a grip, could be in the way for the sliding when opening, and it almost certainly would limit the options of opening to push-only, as it would by hard to get a grip on the top part for lifting of the back edge...
