  1. Just to make sure I understand right. If we want to use keyboard shortcuts to launch apps, that will require using a launcher that FxTec is developing in house? Meaning it wont work if we change to nova/pixel/google now/trebuchet/etc other launcher? (unless also written into that launcher of course)

    If so, any more info on this FxTec launcher? Will it be open source? Will apk be on on play store? Does it have a name?

    Does anyone know which android launchers already support keyboard shortcuts to apps? I’ve never used this feature, but now that I’m aware of it, I think it sounds useful…

    Different launchers handles keyboard input differently. I tried a few. Most seem to ignore it, some do a search.

    The default launcher is clearly related to "Launcher<3", "Launcher3" and others, but these two has no keyboard shortcut support.

    Blackberrys Launcher (of course) support keyboard shortcuts, But I doubt it supports landscape more than partly..

    I'm sure others will know of some launchers that support keyboard shortcuts and landscape....

  2. Does that mean the 650 prices make them lost money on the sell ? I meam i wouldn’t have bought it for over 700, but i need that company to stay afloat if i want update and replacement part

    Well hard to know their reasons exactly, but COULD be a combination of several things. My guesses would be

    1) An investment with a lower initial price to get the whole project off the ground, as most crowd-funded projects do too.

    2) The pre-orders accumulate to a larger batch, that gives them a better unit price than when ordering small batches to fulfil later orders, as I doubt they have the capital to invest in a huge stock.

    3) Caution for any Brexit-effects.

    And I bet there are more to the list...

  3. Afaik certain launchers already offer that.

    Who said I have to use the standard launcher. ;)

    Oh yes indeed, the launcher is a separate app, it just comes pre-installed. Not cramped with fancy integration-stuff you can not get in other launchers.

    Had the Stock Android launcher handled Landscape decently, I doubt Pro1 would have had a custom one.

    I do not know what other launchers offers short-cut app launches by the keyboard though. Had it on previous hardware keyboard phones/phablets too, and never used it, except by accidental launches... Come to think of it, have not even tested it on the pre-production Pro1. So for my personal usage I could not care less if the feature is there or not. It is (currently?) just app launches, actions could be handy, e.g. open app list, notification or toggle say Location, Bluetooth etc on/off. A lot of possibilities, if exposed by Android..

    For shortcuts to be handy in my book, they should go deeper, so I could do it by some key-combo everywhere, not just from the home screen. When I need to go to the home screen anyway, it is just as easy to add an icon there, that I do not need to remember to what key I linked.

  4. I do not know if there is an event in standard Android Pie on this, that gets triggered. But if not, I think we can take it for granted that Android Q will have an event for fold/unfold, and that could be an obvious candidate to trigger, if no dedicated event exists..

  5. TBH I don’t want sticky modifiers I use 2 hands on hardware keyboard phones

    The only place I in 'normal' usage missed the sticky is to do Alt+Tab. Currently I just let go the double hand grip with the right hand somewhat for that. But I hope that YellowArrow+Tab is going to be a double for that somehow.

  6. According to this: hhttps://source.android.com/devices/input/key-character-map-files#keyboard-type-declaration it seems to be a matter of the KCM file signalling "FULL" or "ALPHA", so MIGHT be as easy as having it as two 'languages'...

    The "character picker" mentioned in the example for ALPHA sounds interesting too!!

  7. * Ctrl+YellowArrow

    And I suggest to handle the last one as you would an AltGr in the mapping.

    This may be a solution (and thank you for the hint) but it may also hinder the tipping flow.

    Depending on where the letter is you need, you have to press and hold both the keys with your right or left hand.

    This most certainly requires you to shift hand position. I already see myself dropping the phone.

    Well you got Ctrl-YellowArrow next to each other on both sides, it is just pressing a thumb on both with one hand, combined with whatever key with the other thumb in the other side. No need to let go the grip at all :)

  8. Don’t forget shift. For those of used to hardware keyboards already, we expect a sticky shift and that’s obviously the most commonly used modifier, at least in English. I’m surprised this is even complicated since most (all?) other keyboard devices already do this.

    Shift is part of "All"... The suggestion with THREE options, was to allow a mode where stickyness was limited to the modifiers only available on one side.

    Sticky modifiers are used to compensate for the lacking ability to do it directly with multiple fingers. But as there are Shift, Ctrl and YellowArrow in both sides, it would be faster to write say P to use the Left Shift combined with the P by the right thumb.

    It is not as much a matter of it being complicated (I think), as a matter of it being a nuisance slowing down typing in the common scenario.

    Sure for the complex multi-modifier key strokes sticky would be preferable, but not for most users for writing ordinary text.

    That is a combo like Alt+Sh+Tab would be virtually impossible to to with thumbs only.

    But one should weigh whether these combos are so common that the inconvenience in letting the normal grip go to do them with one hand free occationally, is enough to outweigh the slowing down of normal typing.

    There will be no general answer for that, it will depend on each users usage-pattern, so hence I suggest the three options:

    * No sticky

    * Alt and Sym Sticky

    * All Sticky (Shift, Ctrl, Alt, YellowArrow, Sym)

  9. So, I’m just curious, are we talking about using the phone one-handed?

    Well even two handed it is a matter of the grip. The intuitive good grip operation is to hold in in both hands and type with the thumbs.

    And here it could be awkward to press say Alt+1.

    At the least it would require to let go the grip of the right hand.

    But one could even hold it with one hand completely passive and operate it completely by four or five fingers on the free hand - and if so sticky would not be needed, (except for some extreme combos like Shift+Alt+YellowArrow+P

    So much a matter of how you hold it if it is needed, I prefer the simple two thumb operation, but might change to using several fingers on the right hand instead,

    I have even experimented with various odd hybrids of holding in left hand and using left thumb, but only support the right side with one or two fingers, and operate with two-three right hand fingers. as pressing say BackSpace when supported relaxed in left hand only feels slightly wobbly.

    But with alternative holding unwanted screen interaction is more likely, Time will tell what I will find most productive...

  10. I agree that sticky modifiers could be a nice OPTION.

    BUT remember that with Shift, Ctrl and YellowArrow on BOTH sides, we actually got easy access to FIVE layouts with a single thumb from either side:

    * (None),

    * Shift,

    * Ctrl,

    * YellowArrow

    * Ctrl+YellowArrow

    And I suggest to handle the last one as you would an AltGr in the mapping.

    I'm not saying that we should not have sticky keys, merely that we might not need them as bad as we thought.

    It is unclear if Sym is supposed to be used as yet another modifier key, or to launch some symbol library, or something else....

    So maybe the 'stickyness' could be offered in three flavours

    None

    Alt (And Sym) only

    All modifiers

    And hopefully with some hotkey to turn it on off, as it might be annoying used on a desk.

  11. Hi, author of the FinQwerty app here.

    Adding support for Pro1 is indeed the plan, and we checked with Eske that remapping works on the current firmware version.

    Here is a page with the current drafts for Scandinavian remaps for the stock US QWERTY and DE QWERTZ layouts:

    https://android.onse.fi/finqwerty/pro1.html

    Feel free to comment :)

    At this point I’m most interested on opinions on the “major” remappings, i.e. where to put åäöæø and where to move the characters they replace.

    Currently they layouts are made so the two letters immediate to the right of P and L are correct. But the letter two positions right of L (that is Ä in Swedish) is the problem, as this position physically is Enter on the shifted qwerty. So the two most oblivious possibilities are to re-purpose the physical Del key of full height, and move the Del function to the "=" left of Backspace OR to move the Ä to the reduced height "=" even further from it's standard position.

    We have also been experimenting with a non-shifted US QWERTY layout for the DE QWERTZ physical layout. I would not be surprised to see that as a popular option...

  12. Is this “split screen” meant to be just two separate windows/tabs or can you configure them to follow each other. Meaning, that if you scroll on one side the other one is the continuation, and follows the other. This would be awesome and weighs up for shortage of screen space when scrolling/viewing for instance “news” in landscape.

    AFAIK they are independent.

  13. ive bought mine,, and am planning to buy another… even though it is clear that they will offer spare parts, which kinda tells you there is no p2 coming anytime soon. if, at all.

    Hmm, why would one exclude the other?

    It is not aPple, but seems like decent people, so they might well expect some of the users to keep the device for many years, even if one or more new models are offered.

  14. I’ve used key remapping on both Samsung Galaxy Relay 4G and BlackBerry priv before, and that works pretty well as long as the key labels are fairly similar on average. I have a hunch that FinQwerty will be available for this phone as well (but yes, it’s just my speculation).

    I can say that it is beyond speculation :-D

    I'm currently in dialogue with Anssi Hannula (The brain behind FinQWERTY), and has already had an early version that make Danish on the shifted US QWERTY much better than the android default available as stock. 8-)

    He is even preparing the needed adjustments to use it based on the unshifted QWERTZ as well.

  15. Its only one week left before the mid of September. Is it still on tracked to be shipped in mid September?

    There are no final words on the exact shipping data and it still refers to future date or estimated to be.

    EskeRahn you the the super boy here, do you know if its still going to be shipped in two weeks?

    Sorry guys i have pre ordered it in early march and been waiting since then, its been a long wait.

    I have no inside knowledge on the shipping - And even if I had, I would not be allowed to share it.

  16. Thanks, a few comments:

    * on keyboards LEDs see this tweet a number of LEDs can be seen, but it is not as extreme as one per, key, so even f they are controlled individually (and I doubt that) you would not be able to light individual keys.

    * the touch at the edges is deliberately ignored, as the earlier firmware often gave unwanted screen interactions opening and closing the screen.

  17. Don’t screen protectors usually have cutouts where the sensors/front camera are on a phone? Are people in this thread assuming sensors will be in the same spot as the other phone with the same screen they are ordering protectors for or just don’t care about that minor detail?

    It is not just the display foil that is identical, it is the whole display assembly with digitizer, glass surface (and holes). BF060Y8M-AJ0-7702

    You can see the fit in the link to another thread a few comments above https://www.fxtec.com/forums/topic/bundled-screen-protector/page/2/#post-33213
