  1. 700 dollar phone and a cheap plastic case for it to rest in? Throw it in a zip up Thule or send a leather sleeve. A clear plastic case takes away from the class of a qwerty keyboard and is bad for other people taking a look at your phone – with this phone they will be. Develop a case worthy of the qwerty comeback – I’m one of the few who held out buying droid 1, 2, 3 , 4 then buying the 4 and 3 several times before opting for the Keyone. The blackberry is a garbage phone and I’m up for a replacement this year I have high hopes for this product and a dope case to come with the pre-order is what I’m looking for.

I guess the difference between $649 and your $700 could cover a more exclusive case. I hope there will be one available as an accessory.

  2. I still haven’t heard anything on water resistance or warranty. Does anybody have info on that?

It has been said at several places that this does not have an IP-rating.

I do not know any particulars on the warranty, but for those in the EU (assuming UK is still in in July), there are law bound warranty. But I hope someone from the company can tell you more.

  3. I was wondering, how many Czech people are here, looking forward to a qwertz version? Just came on my mind we have several specific letters too (eg. Žščřúůáíý etc.), but I am assured that we are a weak community. So how many we are here?

I'm quite confident that all these characters will be available software-wise, when Czech is selected - no matter the print on the keys.

I have already started on a little pc tool for customization, though I still lack the info on what files are used and the format of those. But I hope for complete flexibility, and sharing of layouts, so even the smallest minority can fit them for their own preferences, using the print that is closest as a base. E.g. The German QWERTZ would be quite close to the Scandinavian, so even if Scandinavian print is not made....

I do not not know enough on android to know if it will be possible to 'piggy-bag' on GBoard's dictionaries and spell-checking, but I hope so.

  4. So we can see that after US/UK QWERTY and German QWERTZ layouts, the next preferences are Scandinavian and Russian layouts.

Remember also that Scan can easily substitute Den, as the difference is just additional print that needs to be ignored on two keys for Danes.

And as suggested earlier a large portion of those wanting US/UK are likely to have never even bothered with this thread, and thus did not vote.

  5. I have another question, what’s the max brightness in nits of the display?

I have tried to Google for some brightness on the "Elephone U Pro" that uses the same display, but not found any numbers.

But a subjective compare of the S8- and the (pre-production) Pro¹ (both cranked up to full brightness and no blue filter or the like), the Pro¹ is clearly brighter.

ADD: Tried to put them at auto and shine a bright led torch at the sensors of both (placed head-to-head) and here my impression were that they were of about equal brightness. (The S8- is known to go for a higher brightness in auto, than if you just pull the bar to 100%, the Pro¹ does not do that. If you crank it to 100%, it do not care about the sensor)

  6. You can even lift it from the table in the top half, and push the bottom half ‘away’ opening it while doing it…

Eske, what phone you are using? Wow, you did not find out earlier?? easyyyy, that is perfect for one hand opening :-D :-D Using it quite often!! :-D

He he, haven't had a real tilt slider since the N97mini ten years ago.... (Gave that up for the Xperia Neo Pro, as N97mini only works in the dark...)

  7. Indeed, still using this feature at my Nokia E7, but I guess when there is a fingerprint sensor at the side, you will reach it with your tip finger every time when you turn the phone 90° (what you have to do always when wanna to slide it) and at that moment the pin is not needed any more, because when sliding the keyboard, you can already unlock the phone only by holding it in the correct direction and with tip finger on the scanner, am I correct?

    You are correct. :)

The keyboard open does trigger just as pressing power, so if the device is not locked, it is active when opened.

If locked, it is just touching the scanner with the right index (or middle) finger after opening.

I feel it natural to hold the index finger at the 'support plate', that is between the two 'halves', which is close to the sensor, for easy access.

I think it is a matter of 'muscle memory' to find the ideal way to pick it up, slide open and unlock in one sweep (almost unconscious) movement.

BTW I noticed an alternative way of opening it(!), Rather than pushing the front edge, you can lift the back edge. That is ideal for a discrete opening, e.g. during a meeting, where the cool clang would draw attention.

You can even lift it from the table in the top half, and push the bottom half 'away' opening it while doing it...

  8. On 4) I do not know if there will be some official ones, but I think it MIGHT be possible to cut a protector for the S8+ or S9+ as these are slightly longer, but looks to have a fairly similar edge-design, and they are 73.4 resp. 73.8mm versus the 73.6mm of the Pro¹

That will be one of the very first things I will try to do when I get my hands on one.

(I already ordered some tempered glass protectors for the two models and a glass cutter….)

The cutting failed miserably, but protectors for the Elephone U Pro with the same front exists.

  9. ... plan is to try if a tempered glass protector for a Samsung S8+ or S9+ has the right side curvature (the width is 0.2 mm larger resp. smaller) and then use a glass-cutter to shorten it sufficiently......

This failed miserably, but protectors for the Elephone U Pro with the same front exists.

  10. Biiiig thanks for this quite detailed (p)review Eske!

Fine dog of yours there btw… I’ve also got one of them swiss rascals lurking around :)

You are welcome and thanks. Then you know how horrible they are to get right on Photos. *LOL*

Sometime he is playing with a pitch black German Shepherd, and it is simply hopeless to get BOTH right in a photo - despite many attempts, none really good, least bad one where he lies in the shadow and she in the sun a couple of years ago....

  11. Add them to you dictionary, but I agree!

I do not want auto correct full stop when using the keyboard I will fix it myself automatically and if using a terminal or something your going to be typing a lot of things that are not in a dictionary.

As with so many things, OPTIONS is the answer. I do not see why one user group should be forced to use the setting the other group prefers. So I certainly hope they will have a switch for it, so both can have what they prefer. And some (like me) can turn it off/on depending on what we are currently entering...

(With the pro-production unit I tested, it is off, when not displaying a virtual keyboard. But the keyboard software part is clearly not finished)

  12. I think I’ve got my N97 around somewhere still never had the mini, unfortunately mine has died as well charge port failure but I am sure I kept it.

Will look forward to some images of your Pro¹ with the great grandfather when you get it.

....And hopefully you are less lazy than me, so you clean the old thing up a bit before photos *LOL*

  13. Great read! Good job on the text. I only skimmed through it now, will read it thoroughly later!

I almost started crying seeing the Sony Xperia Pro there! :D Still the perfect size for my not so big hands. That phone with modern hardware, with edgeless screen and 2:1 screen (i.e. have some top and bottom bezels) would be perfect.

Thanks. I guess we are at about the same place.

Made this dream some time ago (though I would not mind having the key-quality upgraded like the Pro¹):

ADD: Oh note that this was before I noticed the bug everywhere, the device is really 15.3 not 13.5,mmm

    Here with corrected image:

  14. I love it! Very nice pictures and neat animation :). Now I am yet more excited for launch time. If they add nubs on the f and j keys I don’t think the shifted layout would take me too long to get used to personally. Looking at it side by side with the other phones this is definitely gonna be the biggest and best keyboard ever on a phone, even on a total new level from what we used to have with n97 and n900 etc :).

I do too, It is just my specimen that lacks the F and J markers as I understand it. I doubt that they will make much difference though, except for those with fingers fine enough to do real ten-finger typing. Think of thumb-typing like typing with the index fingers only on your pc, here the homing is not really that helpful. But nice that they add it for those that wants it. "Function is key".

Unfortunately the one that inherited my N97Mini did not return it when she upgraded (it was broken)

But would have loved to have these to side by side, to show the huge difference, and yet the legacy,

  15. I believe I am. It is an awesome device, hardware-wise, but the software still need some ironing out, but it is surprisingly bugfree. But the keyboard driver/app definitely need some work. I plan to compose some sort of mini-review over the next few days, when I find the time for it. also comparing it with some older devices.

I wrote a bit on my first experiences here

  16. Yeah, most flaghships nowadays let you choose resolution. LG; Samsung, Google and OnePlus at least afaik.

I use a grid of 7×5 on my phone. May I ask; how do you get a “4½” icon grid? :P

Many phablets today offers (W)QHD or (W)QFHD, and as this on usual viewing distance is hard to benefit from (see e.g. this to test your own eyes), it makes a lot of sense to offer emulated reduced logical resolution, to ease the works for graphics engines/cpu, and thus save battery power.

On the Pro¹ we start with WFHD, so not that much point in emulating say WHD. But sure technically they could offer it.

Ah, well 4½ icons visible at a time in height in the scrolling directing. ;-p - See e.g. this official tweet from a few days ago..

  17. Looks like there is no space for your thumb if you hold it in portrait with your right hand. Could be solved because it is a little wider than most phones. How is it?

If you hold it in the right hand the 'natural' way (speaker up), the thumb rest above the volume keys. But you can also hold it speaker down, giving easier access to the keys. But the launcher currently(?) does not support that, so they would either have to change that, or you would need another launcher.

  18. Is it a dedicated fingerprint reader? Not combined with the power/lock button? Then not enrol the pinky is a solution. But I know it as a combined button.

It got a power button AND a fingerprint reader. Scanning an enrolled finger (of course) unlocks, so you do not need to press both. If you do not enrol fingerprints, you can use the classic button, ignoring the scanner.
