Any updates on desktop OS's?

Recommended Posts

Hi

There have been Some talking About other OS's and an open downloader. As the phone supports USB C video out, it could be an interesting deplacement for an UMPC.

I Know that Windows 10 ARM is unfortunatly not going to happen, according to earlier answers - Even thou the much less capable devices like the Lumia 950XL can run it just fine

But are there anything else that can be used as a desktop enviroment over USB C video out?

Best regards

I have been playing with chroot on the Pro¹ lately, extremely happy with it, even though it is still rough around the edges. Even my N900 never felt so close to an actual pocketable computer. Therefor

this is my mobile "desktop" solution. i want to make it with my pro1.

Ubu chroot on Pro¹ running SFOS: Thanks Preflex and TheKit!

With Android 10 you are able to use desktop mode over HDMI. It needs little bit tweaking but I believe it will be more useful after devs look into it.

But the first requirement isn't met on the Pro1:

1. Your Android smartphone must be running Android 10.

I'm using a Lumia 950 now. I have the hub, a BT KB, screen, etc. & would be mega interested in this possibility!  But ATM, looks like it's a non-starter??

F(x)tec has previously said that they are working on Android 10 update. Also there are apps that can do it for you even without Android 10 (like Sentio Desktop).

That is actually quite interesting!

However its still android, and Will still miss the desktop applikations - which is quite important for productivity in my case. Microsoft Office with a browser simply wont do.

You can get https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andropenoffice&hl=en_GB😉

Don't forget Microsoft also release office apps for android as well https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.office.word&hl=en_GB

You can open and edit excel spreadsheets with the google spreadsheet app. That works quite well and keeps the formats as they are supposed to be.
However, some functions are not available in mobile use (like CTRL+L for quick sorting).

I wonder when the time comes when we can use full Linux- or Windows systems with mobile devices (emulators are not the same).
A phone like this with good specs and a hardware keyboard would perfectly fit and I'd be very happy to finally use a desktop browser with desktop add-ons on the go.
In my dreams there would even be a small mouse in the middle of the keyboard (the small knob that laptops had previously) to use as a cursor when needed. But this wouldn't be a prerequisite.

Look at Windows on arm on lumia 950 xl, and/or GPD in - its already here.

The issue is that Office is NOT good - you are restricted to simple applications like Microsoft Office and the like

Maybe Ubuntu touch or whatever ubports version is called would be good for this?   Dunno if anyone from ubports is getting pro1, but if they are, I'd imagine they'll try to port it...  and I imagine some of the work done by the sfos devs would be applicable...

But those are mobile systems with mobile apps. You can't install a desktop browser with addons, nor can you use excel with full functionality like it was demanded here.

Also, a desktop OS is useless without a keyboard (hence there is no demand and therefore no supply). So I'd want Windows on a Pro 1 with hardware that can handle it and a complete keyboard.

Apart from emulators which would probably allow Windows XP to run on this hardware (and I'm honestly considering to use it), there's just no option to get a desktop OS running in the phone. And emulators are slow.

A full Windows build will not be possible on ARM, that was said earlier and the Pro1 does not make a difference there. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, Snapdragon 835 is able to run Windows 10 and it has been demostrated earlier:

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3323381/intel-vs-snapdragon-we-test-hps-envy-x2-with-both.html

However, I have not seen any Win10 ports on smartphones that uses SD835. There are Win10 ports to Pixel 3 (SD845) and OnePlus 6T (SD845).

I'm interested in the Pro1 if it can be used as a desktop UMPC. Are desktop Windows and Linux OS's/distros something f(x)tec is actually looking into or is it more like users figuring it out themselves kind of thing?

Thanks.

I'd wish to have a Windows platform as well, even if its performance wasn't that great.

But as far as I've heard, there were just some users (developers) trying their best to get parts of Windows working on mobile devices, just to show that it is possible.

I fear, FXtec won't have the resources to make that happen. And there won't be enough demand for developers to work on it themselves.

Yeah. Since I am not going to play on this phone for the most part, I am not interested in Windows on anything at all (gaming is the only reason I am keeping Windows on my desktop altogether).

So if I went ahead and worked on something, it wouldn't be Windows for sure - no matter how well Office works (I prefer MS Office to any other office suite).

But I certainly wouldn't mind if someone made it happen and usable. Then again x32 applications run rather slowly on ARM and x64 don't run on Windows 10 for ARM at all (though I believe MS is working on it).

But I certainly would be interested in a HDMI-via-USB-C-out.

Well, FlyingAntero has shown that it does work with the Snapdragon 835.

For me, Windows is more than a gaming platform, although I understand that others prefer Linux over it. I'd be happy with a desktop Ubuntu system as well.

The thing is that all those apps that you get on mobile systems are filled with ads and "in-app purchases", mobile sites of websites are filled with ads (or not working at all) and the user is forced to do as the developer (of Android or the app) wanted to. Just look at the stupid overlays of some mobile sites which block up to two thirds of your screen.

On windows: right click, properties, 'remove line' (or a script blocker in the first place).

If a program on Windows doesn't act like I wish, I can change some parameters. If it is filled with ads, I block the servers via a blacklist. And if a program thinks that it wants to update, I just disable its internet connection. Even if Windows itself wants to download the newest updates without permission, I can find a way to prevent that via the registry.

Apart from better office functionality, much bigger program availability and a cleaner system in overall (where is my easy way to organize files, pictures and so on in ten different folders in Android?), Android is simply a system with very little customisation. The custom roms improve that, but only by a little.

I'm really looking forward on getting a desktop OS for a phone with a hardware keyboard. If it's Linux, I'll get used to it. But mobile systems are simply an horrible experience (for me). And that won't change for a while since there's no real competition.

I don't understand this stuff well enough myself to explain it, but if you need a desktop solution that works today, I think your best bet is sfos with linux chroot.

For example

Filez and more infoz here: https://github.com/elros34/sailfish_ubu_chroot

It's up to Ubuntu 19.04 now and appears actively maintained.  I recognize the name elros34 as he did the sfos port for photon q.
