Hey guys! I know the subject of this thread won't be relevant to everyone, but we have had a few comments from customers who have been struggling to open and shut their Pro1... I just wanted

....And here another slow motion opening both the Pro1 and a flip case in one go by the lift front method. YouCut_20200123_155044091.mp4

This is a very satisfying thread.

Haven't used an N900 since 2015 as a daily driver but I keep grabbing at the little switch on the right side (which isn't there but the N900 had) to unlock my pro1 when it's open. Damn muscle memory. 😄

The Nokia E7 had that on the long left side / the front towards you when opened. It was a neat little switch that was very easy to find and use but also hard to operate by mistake, much unlike a simple button. It also turned on the flashlight when you held it. Very satisfying.

Hey fxtec, can we have a switch like that on the Pro2?

I can't one handed open without pushing volume or power buttons.

Really?  I can one handed open it all day long without hitting any buttons.  I just use my right thumb on the bottom right corner and my middle finger in between the reader and camera button.  All one really needs is a single finger and a thumb (assuming it's resting in your palm).

But that assumption makes is TWO hands...

Huh?  No, resting in the palm of my right hand with my right thumb at the lower right, and my right middle finger in between the fingerprint reader and camera button.  It's all with one hand.  I can do the same thing with it in my left palm, but it's more difficult to get leverage because of the where the volume buttons are placed.  However, phone in left palm, left thumb on bottom left of screen (close to SIM card tray), and left middle finger right above the volume buttons.

Phone can easily be picked up with one hand and opened with one hand (seems very easy to me).

Edit: Even easier (meaning less force, not that much is needed) is to not rest it in the palm but pinch it between the thump and middle finger.  However, the disadvantage here is my thumb follows the edge of the screen and drags across the keys (from bottom of kbd toward the top which sometimes presses keys).  The way I detailed above doesn't depress any keys or buttons.

Ah, holding the usb end away from you, yes sure that works. So going from portrait to open, you turn the device upside down in your hand first, right?

Ummm... I don't think so, I'll try again without a video.  Let's use the right hand since most people are right handed.  The phone would be resting in the right palm with the bottom of the phone touching the skin of the palm of your right hand.  Your right thumb would be resting against the edge of the screen close to the down and right arrow keys (but you can't see them because the screen is closed).  Middle finger in between the fingerprint reader and camera button.  Then just gently pinch your thumb and middle finger.  Make sense?

I really loved those flick-switches on E7, also on the other side for volume. easily and precisely accessible, very handy with the hold-for-torch function, no accidental activation.
Just had to be careful about them at reassembly.

I would definitely support a rebirth of these.

Either i do not get it at all, or we are simply using different words due to different reference frames (relative to landscape/portrait).

By the "bottom" I meant seen as portrait, that is where the USB is. But if you by "bottom" means the long edge where the spacebar is, We of course are miscommunicating. 😄

@EskeRahn You are correct, different frame of reference to describe the same thing.  I see in the pic you are holding it portrait, but I hold it more landscape so when it opens the phone only rotates like 75 degrees and it's ready to be used in landscape mode.  What really confused me was when you said turn it upside down first as I never have it upside down (assuming the screen is the top).

Ah! Another axis of rotation too *LOL* I meant "speaker earpiece towards you". 😂

I just wanted to clarify that the Pro1's slider mechanism wasn't designed to simply slide open

And that's a major design flaw. It should slide open easily, without applying much force. Just like all the other QWERTY sliders did back in the days.
Otherwise you can't even walk and type.

I've tried/found the various ways to open it described here and while, yes it gets a bit easier after a while, none of them is really practical for daily use.
It requires way too much force, it takes too long (which makes writing a quick message impossible), it's completely counterintuitive for a device that's supposed to bring back the keyboard slider.

If you open it the way it's apparently supposed to be opened, you're always in danger of throwing the device out of your hands.
If you lift it up from the front side - which is super difficult because of the edged screen, another design flaw - it's not really a slider anymore. And why would you even open it `while still holding it in portrait mode?
I ended up having to lift it up from the other side of the screen like Eske mentioned, but that's really slow and also not a sliding motion at all.

The mere fact that you have to explain such a simple thing to your customers is proof that this is badly designed.
And frankly, this should've come up during the early planning/production phase. Don't you have a QA department that points these things out?

Accessing the keyboard should be an intuitive and subconscious process. Instead it's something you have to completely shift your focus to so that you can actually pry the device open without it landing on the ground.
I'm completely baffled how this design made it into the final product. There were so many QWERTY smartphones in the past that got it right, how could get it so wrong?

I have attached a video for those who might be struggling with the knack, or are worried that the phone doesn't slide open like they expected.

I really like this video. I keep watching it while I wait for my package to be released.
But to truly appreciate the clack, we need to look at it for longer, so here is the video 8x slower. Courtesy of AI technology, which will go sentient and kill us all soon: https://streamable.com/5w05p
