Hi everyone, A brief, honest informal update as promised. The US/APAC shipment from the 2nd batch has now been fulfilled, and some of you should have already been contacted by your couriers to confirm your delivery date. In the meantime, the 1st US batch is still stuck somewhere in a US customs office sorting hub awaiting to be shipped back to our main warehouse in Hong Kong. Customers from the 2nd US batch will be contacted by FedEx for their customs payment, as we have now decided to ship devices directly from Hong Kong in an effort to save time and avoid further foreign importer c10 points

Thanks to the included screen protector your Pro1 is protected from damage caused by accidental drops :).5 points

Just purchased my Pro1 earlier this week. Looking forward to it coming when it comes. I long since gave up on owning any QWERTY phones since Blackberry dropped the ball. My current phone works fine and I can wait a little bit longer. If anything, the only mistake was opening up this forum before you guys started shipping the devices. You're selling a device to hella rabid power user nerds, what did you expect? π Keep up the good work FXTEC Team!4 points

If you really want an un-Googled version of stock, I can build that since I do have access to the sources. But personally, I highly recommend Lineage instead. It has some nice features that stock does not. You should file an issue for calls on my github. You can file the lock pattern issue with Lineage, as I dont have anything to do with that. Lineage recovery should be able to flash the su package. If not, please let me know. I could build su into the ROM, but that would upset others. FxTec has been very engaged and helpful with development. I appreciate that a great d4 points

Here we are: the people who ordered late; back of the line, paying full price. We'll all get it eventually. Welcome to the future Pro1 lovers' club. :)4 points

As I always say, THANKS to tdm for all his dedication and efforts. Again, very much appreciated! Additionally, here we have yet another reason to stop whining and complaining about F(x)tec, and, instead, be grateful they are supporting us as they are with other ROMs! Thank you F(x)tec from a customer who will only use the phone with a custom ROM! ππ3 points

Another $100 to Uncle Sam is definitely not going to talk me out of my Pro1. It might talk me out of my second one, or at least into waiting a little longer. I understand about informed consent; the problem is that no one expected manufacturing to take as long as it did. That is what it is, and no one can change it at this point. $100 doesn't stand between me and anything I truly wish to have at this point. I'm not rich but I have enough to get what I need and some of what I desire. The Pro1 is definitely on my "desire intensely" list. :)3 points

Hey, not only the USA is waiting, we're all in one boat here :-D. I'd also kinda given up hope for good qwerty phones before Pro1 came along, but here we are, welcome! Shameless promotion: we also have an unofficial discord full of rabid nerds to ease the waiting https://discord.gg/k4NtAGy3 points

I'll probably use a mule device to get a SIM of the appropriate size and then insert and BLAMMO! They'll never know the difference. Of course, I might just take it to the local VaZelon store to see their faces. I might even stick a recording Droid in a pocket with a hole to get candid reaction video. :P3 points

Honestly? If I were allowed to choose, I'd rather not have anyone actually get and keep my data. I do not care what good they might or might not be doing. One reason I liked Windows XP and even 7 was the fact, that they were much more privacy-friendly. I dislike Windows 10 for this reason (yet as a software architect I am using it both at work AND at home - though only on my laptop and my gaming rig, which will become one and the same computer in a few months thanks to eGPU). My server is running Ubuntu and while I do know Canonical was a bit careless offering internet search engine3 points

Haha, there is definitely something to be said for not getting the first few devices in a run while they're still learning how to do it. :)2 points

If it's really going up from 5% to 15% in another 9 days, that would be a reason to get as many phones into the states ASAP! I hope FxTec is aware of that date, regardless of who ends up paying it...2 points

I think it's US Sales Tax that you're not sure how works. But unless you live there, why should you? But incase you're curious.... Every state in the US can have sales tax if they want. The rate varies from zero to ~10% in some states. FxTec collected this from US customers to pay the state for us, so early preorders paid $649+tax, the tax amount shown as a separate line item on our invoice. (Now 699+tax). FxTec submits the collected tax to the state we are resident of on our behalf, otherwise we are supposed to do it ourselves. This has nothing to do with duty / impo2 points

Agreed. I don't think there's much chance of yours making it this year; the late preorders werent even claimed to be there that quickly, and with recent info saying 10-20%/shipping per week, you won't have yours in time. If you're going on a trip for a couple weeks, it'll probably arrive after your return. If you're relocating, then you'll want fxtec to ship to new location.2 points

Picture is somewhat inaccurate. The phone needs to be replaced with an N900 or a Droid, more people need to be added (a bunch more), and I have a feeling everyone should be holding or using physical keyboard phones (and as such aren't in any real rush since we are all still very productive π).1 point

Check your State Income Tax Return when you file in January. It asks if there is any oustanding unpaid Sales Tax that you owe the State. It is true there is no mechanism to collect at present. The Sales Tax is still due; whether or not one pays it is a different matter. Also, I mentioned that to show that it is not a valid offset to the Import Tax/Duty/Tariff, as State Sales Tax is State level Tax, whereas the Import Tax/Duty/Tariff is Federal level. NOTE: I am not accusing, I am ASKING because Erik has stated that buyers will now be responsible for the Import Duty/Tax/T1 point

I would imagine this is based on a wholesale price, not its retail selling price, but it's hard to say. It might be applied to the wholesale price when a reseller is importing them, and the retail price when buying direct. All I can say for certain is that the government of China is evil, and anything that incentivises building things elsewhere is a net good for humanity (although arguably bad for the Chinese people) and I'm willing to pay a little extra to facilitate that. I can also see where F(x)tec got backed into a corner by timing on this one and found themselves facing significantl1 point

For me the problem is not about being able to use an aged phone as I, like silversolver, am using a 2012 phone as a daily driver (and am very content). I don't like the portrait keyboard, but even if I could acclimate to the keyboard, I definitely didn't like having something that was locked down for Blackberry only signatures. Once it was known that there was no way around their protection, it became a deal breaker for me and I gave my Priv away. Windows XP is a relatively new OS! ππ I still have a handful of DOS machines doing data logging and (simple) CAD control, I even have a Windo1 point

I'm also wondering if there is a way for us to help paying for the increased shipping cost. I used my IGG code and would be very fine with returning the discount.1 point

Think of it this way. If you lived in a state with no sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon), fxtec didn't collect anything to refund. But you now will have to pay import duty, a completely new cost.1 point
-
I'll preface this by saying that I know nothing about US import costs. Why is it irrelevant that F(x)tec will refund the sales tax? How I read the situation is that you'll need to pay some sort of sales tax to get the device, then you'll ask for a refund to F(x)tec for those costs, and then F(x)tec pays you? In that situation the sales tax is still paid, so legally it's all right, and you didn't need to pay anything in the end. In the previous situation F(x)tec prepaid the sales tax, so you didn't need to pay anything. Same results?1 point

He said you will need to pay the additional cost. But they are going to pay you back the money. @Erik "we will, of course, refund the state sales tax that our US customers had to pay for "1 point

I would say our experiences are pretty similar. I am using LOS14.1 and Brave Browser, K9 mail, and little else. I occasionally use Sygic Navigation, and it's slow to load, but works fine once it's up. Polaris Ride Command is a total dog, but actually does work if you're REALLY patient. I found that switching from zram to true swap on the SD (su, swapoff /dev/block/zram0, swapon /mnt/media_rw/XXXX-XXXX/swapfile on every reboot) gives MUCH better reliability and far fewer random reboots with slightly better performance under some circumstances because it has more real RAM available. So I have spent most of the day today trying to get TWRP to decrypt FBE. It has been quite an adventure, as my only prior experience with TWRP decrypt has been FDE on Android 7.0 which is quite simple to support. FBE on Android 9.0 requires a lot of infrastructure that I had not known about. I'm not done yet. Hope to have it working in the next couple of days. I'm also preparing an EDL package for user consumption. This will allow anyone to un-brick their device and restore the stock factory image no matter how badly they damage the software. But don't go erasing your entire1 point

Now that we have a working Lineage install, I think we need an issue tracker. I think the easiest thing to do is to use github since it has a built-in issue tracker for projects. https://github.com/tdm/android_device_fxtec_pro1/issues1 point

Okay test2 build is up at the page linked in the OP. Please note the instructions have changed. I have switched to MindTheGapps. This is a gapps package maintained by a Lineage developer and it plays nicely with A/B. Enjoy!1 point

This is actually the first plausible argument I've heard as to why a locked bootloader could benefit the user (as opposed to only the HW vendor): If you have an attacker who gains physical access to your phone, with an unlocked bootloader they could dump the encrypted content from the phone and then either brute-force the key (if you used a PIN or a weak password), or (if you used a strong password) repace the OS with a version that logs the encryption password and sends it to the attacker, who then decrypts the previously gained dump when you unlock your phone the next time. No one with physical access to my devices is smart enough to install a game since I disable or remove every single Google thing on it, including the store. :O You're worried about so-called "evil maid" attacks, apparently. I'm not worried about that, and would hardly call it a security nightmare under normal usage, but it is nice to know that locking the bootloader is possible for those who wish it. The folks at F(x)tec promised a device that could be customized to virtually anyone's wishes, and they really have delivered. Bravo! Yeah well some users remind me of children not getting their toy on a promised day. Why does the order number matter? Nothing matters here. They have stated when they send the batches out. I don't see a problem here except butthurt people who can't wait anymore. It's still a fresh new company that produces their first phone. A phone that seems to be very well thought through. Give those people some rest.1 point

I would like to add: Mail client: Aqua Mail (Pro). I'm using the pro version, not sure about the free version. Office: Softmaker Office HD for Android: tested Textmaker HD + Planmaker HD - MS Office compatible, works very well in landscape and with physical keyboards ToDo: MLO 3 All apps regularly used on phone and tablet using bluetooth keyboards in landscape mode. Phone is a Moto Z Play, so results should be comparable to the Pro1.1 point
