As i just ran into trouble while applying the screen protector that came with the Pro1, i would like to discuss a safe way to do it. There where no instructions included with my protector. Since there are many different types of protective films, first of all it helps to know that the one supplied is of the variety consisting of 3 layers, 2 protective layers sandwiching a very thin rubbery actual protective film that wraps around the curved screen when all is done. Had i know that, i would have not tried to peel that tiny white sticker off the upper protective layer which i assumed to be5 points

As I understand it, batches 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 were on the ship. However, the phones which float back up to the surface will be returned to Hong Kong for redistribution via alternate means. Although this will considerably delay the phones getting to you, there's nothing to worry about because they are still on track for Christmas delivery. πππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππ Sorry I couldn't resist. π4 points

I just hope the Pro2 has a flat screen with a proper bezel like the Droid 3 (but not hexile, please....I never minded it, but others hated it) so this is all a non-issue. Curved screens are pandering to the type of people who don't buy this category of device anyway. It was IMO a poor choice, but it may have come down to what was quality and available at a reasonable cost and with good availability.4 points

I feel very much the same way. And rather than seeing them as competitors as such, I see it as variety, and that is the most important thing. Different people, different use cases, different needs&wishes. And thus different devices best suiting those. And frankly I see more potential Cosmo users that could use a Pro1 instead, than the other way round. Had they had a double hinge for bending over and no secondary screen, then they would have targeted an audience that want/like a hard shell protected device and a landscape keyboard device (plus a slab) in one. On the forum here and a few other sources I learned that the Pro1 uses "system-as-root" for the stock rom which seems partly self explanatory to a linux guy and a quick search does tell me approximately what it means. There's also talk of it being an "A/B device" which also appears to be about the partition table (and not really the device since we can run different operating systems :-), and that appears to be needed for seamless updates. But I am still left wondering what does it all mean exactly and why it is chosen to be so? System-as-root seems to have a downside being that we can no3 points

Have noticed some new users active on the forum, figured it was time to bump this. 36 users online and 104 offline right now. There is a chat room that welcomes random chat on any topic (including pro1), plus other rooms dedicated to just pro1 topics. Occasionally a useful or interesting message is 'pinned' in these rooms, so others can see what they might have missed. You can run it straight from a web browser, or get a dedicated app/client for many OS/devices.3 points

Yes, that is a big benefit of the A/B design. Another is that you can fully use the phone while the update is happening, without rebooting, since the files aren't in use on the other partition. When you are ready to switch to the new version, you can reboot at a time that makes sense for you, and come back up on the other partition.3 points

By the way, and I should have posted this first... Thank you tdm for all your hard work in getting LOS to work on the Pro1. I'm interested in a Pro1, but will only use it when a custom ROM is available. Thus, I have been patiently waiting for this to come to fruition. Might very well be time to place an order as it appears I'll get it by Christmas (-JUST KIDDING! On the Christmas part, not kidding on placing an order).3 points

I was explaining my reasoning TO you, not ABOUT you. However, being confusing is sort of a specialty of mine, and in a forum where everyone rather shouts at once, well, being confusing is especially easy. :O No apology needed; it was a simple misunderstanding. No harm done and no hard feelings.3 points

maybe someone who uses a smartwatch and bluetooth headset and keeps it in a backback/briefcase/purse, for the occasional time they need a terminal/computer when they didn't expect it but happy to have it? It seems cool, but I don't want one myself, I prefer a decent sized laptop (17" w/full-size keyboard) and a small keyboard smartphone (5.25-5.5" ProΒ²).3 points

I would like to say that i no longer worry about when will my pro 1 will be shipped. its been too long and i dont see any point to ask because whatever reply i get from fx tec never turned out to be the case. i have been promised several times a date and it passed. i guess there are reasons and problems they are facing that has caused delay. after all fx tec is doing business and their best interest is to ship and sell. but i wish they could be more open about it. and i dont see the point anymore to discuss it in this forum because its not helpful either. i will just say i dont expec3 points

I'm still lurking these forums because I'm genuinely interested in the Pro1 and I do want it to succeed. But seeing the same game playing out of the vague words of the last official communications being picked apart, and guesses being made and re-made... I can't tell you how much better I feel having cancelled. Seriously, I remember the wonderings of the last few months and I'm very relieved to no longer feel like that. I can be 100% certain about whether or not I'll be getting a Pro1 this year, and that feels strangely ok.3 points

I am pleased to announce test builds for LineageOS 16.0. Please note this thread is for test builds. These builds are not necessarily stable or suitable for daily use. You can find the build(s) and detailed installation instructions here: Lineage on FxTec Pro1 Test Builds Please report any issues here and I will do my best to fix them. Thanks!2 points

I joined the backing for the f(X)tec pro1 shortly after backing the "Cosmo communicator" https://store.planetcom.co.uk/products/cosmo-communicator This phone is available now for me and I received mine a day or so back! Here is a brief first impressions write up: The keyboard is really nice to type on on a desk, however as a result this device is cumbersome to use as a phone. (Pasted from a different thread - updates afterwards) It's weird how much it bothers me that there is no large front display, because I've previously owned loads of clamshells (pretty much a2 points

In EDL mode the device waits to receive an executable signed with the correct key. The common use for this mode is to load and run a 'firehose' low-level flashing tool. If you are interested in learning more, I recommend this article from Aleph Security.2 points

All other phones that I've had that is the easy way to install TWRP, and TWRP is the new safe space... Or am I mistaken and it's another partition that normally overwritten with TWRP?2 points
-
Thanks for the clarification. It would have been more clever if it was the same partition BUT with two directory-trees! So the running version just saw some space gobbled in a RO directory while new files were added. In the other tree existing files conflicting were logically moved into a reserved RO space when new versions were added. This way you would only be 'wasting' space for the files that differs and done cleverly you might even share the part of the directory that relates to non-system files. ... You could even allow for keeping more than two versions, with minimal waste... Of co2 points

Yes. Any OTG adapter/hub should work for USB mouse; bluetooth mouse also works.2 points

Sure, it's definitely possible, as it could be done entirely in software, but I do question whether or not it would be usable. Can we get an adapter to plug in a real mouse? LOL2 points

I own an OQO but didn't want to carry that plus a phone. Being able to be a meh phone, and /just/ about being able to squash into a pocket* is quite valuable compared to a laptop that would require a bag or for me to have to carry around. *I said before it doesn't fit in my pocket, but technically it fits in by roughly 95%. I wear blokes jeans, I need to make sure my belt is tight because the phone is so heavy! I wouldn't trust its safety whilst cycling.2 points

Rather than the "GPD pocket" I would consider something like this type. Add: Exists in more than one variant, see e.g. this review.2 points

I feel the same. If I would feel a real use case for me, I would buy both (the same like I have also pre-ordered PinePhone). ...and as of F(x)tec, if their quality is the same what I saw and it remains high quality, I will buy further phones from them when they have successor of this form factor.2 points

I also feel they're for a different use case or perhaps different type of user, I think majority of people would think that way... Competitor does come to mind as a term regardless for anyone else selling a phone but i could certainly imagine owning both a Cosmo and Pro1 for different time of the day, although I would probably first consider something the likes of a GPD pocket as competition for Cosmo.2 points

I saw Cosmo Communicator earlier and I would have been bought (I mean pre-order) it if the idea of Pro1 would not existed... ...but I find Pro1 much more suitable for me (as a nearly perfect device). I saw earlier advertisements of Cosmo and found it a bit too large - it is an interesting project anyway, but it seems to be somewhere between a phone and a laptop and its use case for me is missing. Maybe if I would travel a lot by plane or other transports then it may be relatively convenient but I think it is also true of Pro1 especially if a power bank is nearby. Another interestin2 points

I was thinking about this topic again... Would it be possible to program the touchscreen as a touchpad in Android or a desktop OS? That way you could use a cursor in a desktop OS or games in emulators with swiping over the touchscreen. I'm not talking about the exact position of your finger but controlling a cursor with the movement only. Don't blame me, I myself am not sure if this is a good idea either, but it should be possible, right?2 points

It's called EDL, also sometimes called "deep flash". This is a protocol baked into the device boot ROM (real ROM -- read only memory). The factory uses this to flash the device from scratch. I have access to it.2 points

I simply don't get why they did not give it a double hinge, so it could 'bend over' Yoga-style, as more serious laptops do now. They could then ditch the secondary screen, and save size and weight. Had they done that, I most likely would have been interested.2 points
-
Pretty sure older posts in this (very long) thread actually indicated the opposite, by mentioning how the purchase plugin works. Here's an example of one. Additionally, it is very likely that not every person who initiated a pre-order followed up by a purchase.1 point

If I remember right, the turning off was something added - and there were a backside of turning it off too - frankly forgot what it was though. But was enough so that I kept it On, despite all the nuisance.1 point

Requesting desktop site from your phone or tablet has also worked in my experience in both Chrome and Firefox if you don't wish to install the Android app.1 point

That is entirely my fault, sorry. π I changed the product name to match the OEM software last week, and apparently I copied the boot image out prior to making that change. I will get a new test build out soon. Today is rather busy, so probably tomorrow.1 point

That being the case, I'd not wish to undo this, as the Pro1 has plenty of space, and this is a nice failsafe. Theoretically then one could have the stock OS loaded in one and LOS in the other. How would one switch between these?1 point

I don't mind using a real trackpad, though I heartily prefer a real mouse, but having to use the screen as a trackpad sounds cumbersome, because you're obscuring things with your finger as you're moving them. To each their own. Options are wonderful--that's my takeaway value. I sincerely appreciate that people are so willing to provide options. EDIT: just realized what you meant about borrowing a display, which solves the obscuring issue. That could actually be pretty cool.1 point

The problem with that is that the partition has to be R/W mounted in it's entirety which means an unexpected crash or power loss could destroy the metadata beyond repair when unlucky. I've seen this happen. Journalling filesystems are the solution for this but they are not quite as bulletproof as just having one mounted RO and the other R/W.1 point

Yes, an Intel chipset which can run "real" programs would be more suited to me as a laptop replacement; that said, there are certainly very few cases where I would run "real" programs on a 7" machine, given the option of something with a bit more screen real estate.1 point

No, I have just searched a bit and found this photo because I didn't really know how does this light bleed looks like. Theoretically, the curved part of the screen is the source of this problem if I understood well. So, if that is true, then I also think the bottom part of the screen should not have much bleeding. Also, I saw somewhere the light bleed in Pro1 is practically appears at the lower right corner if you hold it vertically where the keyboard can be opened, but I have not found too much information about it and not even a photo of this problem on Pro1 prototypes. What I am wondering is... if you want to type on a table (that's the only real usecase of the Cosmo), why don't buy a small laptop? There are many laptops with a 10" screen (many of them with a 180Β° hinge or detachable keyboard) which would be WAY more usable for typing but still very small to carry around. I don't see how one would type with 10 fingers on a 7" keyboard, but I definitely think that it would be possible with a 10" one. Apart from the missing functionality a mobile device and system has, I just don't see an optimal usecase for a Cosmo Communicator.1 point
-
I use left thumb & three or so of my right hand fingers for almost all of the phones I've mentioned previously. The Cosmo has two type-c ports and when on a table can by typed on extremely quickly. With practice I'd not make 35% errors π I'm not sure Pro1 has higher specs, they seem pretty similar. But for portability comfort, definitely. That looks awful IMO I hadn't heard of the Pro1 when I paid Β£450 as an early backer for the Cosmo. I decided the cost was acceptable to have two devices, so also signed up for the Pro1. I am surprised the A/B issue with gapps issue has gone on for so long. The Pro1 is my second A/B device (the first being 1+6t) and I'm getting rather irritated with the situation. Hopefully someone can do something to fix this soon. For my part, I think I'm going to start doing my personal builds with bundled gapps. Another thought is to just re-pave the Pro1 without A/B support. And switch from FDE to FBE while I'm at it. This would solve several issues: * No more A/B compatibility headaches. * Gain an extra ~4gb or so for data. * Allow system boot without s1 point

We already have the source code required to build our own alternative ROMs. The kernel source is on GitHub, as well as a device tree for LineageOS. This may still be at a pre-release level of reliability, but that is just a matter of debugging effort. The future is only limited by the effort people are willing to put into development for the Pro1, and not by any sort of licensing restrictions.1 point
