Updates? More Consistent Interaction from Dev Team
Doktor Oswaldo replied to rubleaj's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely. A nice stable product which can open this fabulous niche again is the target. Yes other projects have a fancy social media guy which does polls and ask for feedback all the time, but in this project-phase it is just show. I like the silent concentrated approach. They do not promise us anything they can't deliver (I at least hope so). And of course there are still a lot of wishes, but to be honest this phone is more than I dreamed to hope a year ago. -
POLL: What keyboard layout do you want?

Please add Swiss (QWERTZ) and US-International to the selections. -
Updates? More Consistent Interaction from Dev Team
Doktor Oswaldo replied to rubleaj's topic in General Discussion
I agree with you in your point, but would also like to defend them a little bit. I bet they have an awful lot of work to do until July and not that much time to answer questions. It may seem like little work, but I guess some of the questions are sent over and over again. Yes it would be nice to hear more, but this isn't crowdfunding. They have not taken our money, they own us nothing. Still they at least do much more than the big companies do. -
"They can either choose to cancel or accept" That is what I mean. To make the pre-order valid the customer has to actively accept the new pre-order (with US-Layout). This makes it really hard to pre-produce the phone. How many will cancel it? The whole sense behind the pre-order is to have a good estimate about the number of phones they have to produce. Pre-order people also want the phone as soon as it is out. So it is crucial to have enough, but every unit to much is a loss. Of course an open poll would be easier, but you also have to consider following two points: - Drawing people to t

IF they would do it like that, that would most certainly work (not a lawyer). But this would mean, that everybody who does not get the wished layout has to explicitly accept the new pre-order. A lot of people surely would. This means that the pre-order count is a worse indicator for how many device they have to produce, which is all that matters about this pre-order button.

Fingerprint sensor & gestures
Doktor Oswaldo replied to jjarmasz's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
The question however is, how do the gestures behave in the landscape orientation? I don't think that the Google Fingerprint API allows for oriented gestures, or does it? I do not know of a case where you can use the gestures in landscape mode, but not tried that very much. The position in the back would for sure be better to reach from your typical keyboard grip. -
[Idea] The use of "SYM" Key
Doktor Oswaldo replied to Waxberry's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
Yeah I know I seem to be the only one to use "AltGr" but it is a must. There is a reason it is a different key than "alt" and removing a modifier key is always a pain. Keeping it close to the PC-Layout also means it will be easier to use a different OS. -
Fingerprint sensor & gestures
Doktor Oswaldo replied to jjarmasz's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
Exactly. I hate it. But the only real reason to use the fingerprint sensor is for my password-manager anyway. There it is super tiresome to enter my long and complex master-pw with these stupid touchscreens. This will hopefully not be a problem with this phone. So for me no reader at all would do it, but it is a nice addition. Hopefully it will not be in the way of a good secure grip -
Fingerprint sensor & gestures
Doktor Oswaldo replied to jjarmasz's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
I have experienced both methods. I like the side mounted one way better. The button is most of the time at a position you do not accidentally touch (below or above your normal thumb position). The one I have in the back is easy reachable with my index finger and allows for some gestures. This is strange but actually great until you put a case on With my case put on, it gets really hard to put the finger in a valid position, since it has to lie flat on the area. -
What do you think of the latest Pro¹ back case
Doktor Oswaldo replied to EskeRahn's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
Umph forget it, that case. I thought it is the external case (Which would have been a massive improvement to the transparent thing they already showed). Stupid me. In that case I am 100% with you, I hope it is flat or at least not wobbling. I am using my phone quite a lot to watch some stuff. So I hope to use that small angle. -
What do you think of the latest Pro¹ back case
Doktor Oswaldo replied to EskeRahn's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
I quite like the design. However it is a marketing photo and as a such not reviewable. How does it look from the front? I guess the bottom half of the phone has to be broader than the top half with the case on. This could look horrible. -

Control the phone with keyboard
Doktor Oswaldo replied to skkayman's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
Since Android has a native HW-keyboard support this should work. But I have never tried it, so in what degree it is working is not clear to me. At least there is somewhere a review of the pro1 which showed that you can select icons from your home screen with the arrow keys. If it is possible there, i bet you could control pretty much all of android with the keyboard. Everything else will be dependent on the App. -
Exactly what I say. Do a layout right. It is better to make a majority as happy as possible than to try to make everyone a little happy (which will fail). I mean would be great to see the phone (or the version 2) with a truckload of different prints someday. But to have 2 or more layouts merged isn't what will bring non-techies into the phone!
-
I second that. But it is definitely an understandable business decision. The price is already quite high for the specs (without the keyboard). Now I will happily pay that. But for a lot of people 650 is an awful lot of money (especially if you are not from Scandinavia or Switzerland). The retro apparel could be the biggest risk for not selling it. Making it even more looking from the past (thicker with a removable lid) may be a step too far for now. Maybe it is better to have a look how this phone sells. I know we both now that it would be better, but do people know it in generally? I th

Keyboard print layouts and functionality
Doktor Oswaldo replied to caymen's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
Don't get me wrong, would love a Swiss layout. But I think it is not a good idea for fxtec to appeal to such a small market (at least now). Fxtec has the number of pre-orders. So if there are more from Germany and Scandinavia than from Switzerland it is an easy decision. The idea is not to have a German+Scandinavian Layout. The Idea is to have a German layout. The Scandinavian guys here are just saying, that this would work for them too. Why is the international keyboard not enough productive for you? It is just a matter of get used to it (As it would be for other people to learn the Sw -
I mean if everybody wants a Swiss layout go on. But there is no need to get access to the markets. The US-International Keyboard handles German/Swiss-German/French/English already perfectly (and Spanish and some Scandinavian stuff). If other people can get used to the Swiss layout it should be no problem as a Swiss to get used to the US-International layout. Yes it may be a little slower to type umlauts. But it seems stupid to make a niche like Switzerland happy and everybody else has to get used to it. From a business perspective it would be the cleverest to look at the pre-orders, pick the

Keyboard print layouts and functionality
Doktor Oswaldo replied to caymen's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
As a Swiss, I absolutely disagree with that. First of all, Switzerland is a very very small market. So this layout would probably only make you and me happy. There is no reason you absolutely need the Swiss layout except you are typing French and German. If you only use one of the languages you could use that layout. I am absolutely against merging different layouts together. Nobody will be really happy. If you want a keyboard everybody can use, use the US-International. It already exists and is an official standard. Do not merge ñ and so on into a Swiss keyboard and try to sell that as an -
Price,shipping, warranty and screen protection
Doktor Oswaldo replied to pAn's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
It is mostly marginal in the EU. But Switzerland is often not really handled in the logistic. I once ordered a chair from GB which had free shipping to the EU. But it was 69.90 Euros to Switzerland. So it is unfortunately not marginal. -
Price,shipping, warranty and screen protection
Doktor Oswaldo replied to pAn's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
The shipping cost would be important for me too. Depending on that I may order it to a different country (Germany instead of Switzerland, because it is in the EU). And fetch it there. Without this information preodering has to wait for me. It may sound stupid but it wouldn't be the first time the extra 50km to Switzerland would cost a fortune. -
I agree with you, but people do not change that often any more: (source). Seems that people get that the differences are minor now (that's why folding screens are tried, the industry is hungry for everything that is new. Even if it is that stupid. That is also the reason the timing for the Pro¹ is fantastic!). Only tech-bloggers seem to not understand that (no of course you have to write something). But that could also be a chance for the Pro¹. It will be very easy to write an interesting article about the Pro¹ as long as they focus on the keyboard.

Number keys on right-shifted QWERTY
Doktor Oswaldo replied to EskeRahn's topic in Pro1 - Thoughts & questions
Exactly what I meant. I would guess this is easier to remember and should not be a problem for your muscle memory since you are typing with your thumbs -
Agreed. As I am thinking (and unfortunately for you writing) a lot about that, I rather think it isn't stupid. If it would have a flat screen it would look like the Nokia N900 back then. I still would prefer that look, but as a company you wouldn't want to have the looks compared to an old phone in the reviews. Sadly most of the reviews seem to focus quite heavy on the old CPU. Which in my opinion is not that important for 99% of the users. But still leaves the impression of an outdated phone.

To be fair, the galaxy note 8 is way newer than the nokia E7. In these 6 years touchscreens have evolved a lot. Haptic feedback is way better, they are faster, smoother and so on. To put this on the curved screen is most certainly wrong. I completely agree with you that it could be used efficiently with special functions for the curved part. But until now I do not see anything like that. The drawbacks however are known and clear. that makes it hard for some people to understand the decision. But we will have to see, maybe the curved screen will be great.
