I just had to create an account to chime in as a voice of reason here, because there is some seriously toxic entitlement going on in this thread. I, as I'm sure pretty much everyone else who actually desires this device, have been waiting for something like this for 10+ years now. Living through this dumbslab revolution has been awful, and while I haven't been as dedicated as some people here have in their efforts to keep the keyboard alive, I cannot get used to touchscreens and never will. Production issues happen. I was most recently employed with a company that did a lot of smartp7 points

You should ask F(x)tec to refund you and If they do not, aks your CC company. As of now there is no need to use CC protection over normal refund which they do.4 points

They should just ask for a refund through F(x)tec first no need to harm the companies credit rating.4 points

So the story gets weirder. I have a story to tell about nearly bricking my Pro1 3 times... that's a story for another thread and would tell you more about the user than the Pro 1, but I finally ended up just reflashing the original image that Chen posted and taking all four updates including yesterday's. Lol, I forgot how much I put into getting this phone set up the first time. But at least my SMS is working again. I knew how to set up Verizon again and it just worked. Will it fail again at some point or did I do something different in the setup? Did the January update do something?4 points

These are just reminders. Life is hectic after the Holidaze. Don't want anyone to miss a deadline inadvertently. Some dates to keep in mind: 19 days from today: January 26, 2020 = 180 days (6 months) since the first day Pre-order payments were submitted (July, 31, 2019). Why it matters: the ability to chargeback on your credit card expires at 180 days. 17 days from today: January 25, 2020 = Chinese New Year. This lands on a Saturday, so the 7-day long celebration begins the previous day, Jan 24. But factory workers start heading home mid-January and don't return until4 points

Morning i took phone to the nearest service center - it was disassembled here. All connection loops where in salt and green oxide, after cleaning with Kontaktreiniger (Liqui Moly) and assembling it works now. Thanks God, electronics wasn't damaged by short curcuits. Serviceman said that all inner plate connectors are opened and vulnerable to water, and there are lot of holes in cover case - dynamic, microphone, sim-slot... now i try to find as tight silicon case, as it possible. May be glueing with silicon sealant unused holes - f.ex, i dont need 3.5mm jack, because of using bluetooth headset.3 points

@ttodd You make some good points, but there's a lot of points that are almost technically correct, but not quite. Like I'm pretty sure what you claim is a breach of contract isn't even close to that. Or what you're calling a strawman argument, isn't a strawman argument, he isn't making the counter argument easier to attack, he's just using an analogy. I agree with one of your main points (I think) though, that people shouldn't abuse the chargeback protection all willy nilly. Always first try to find a solution with the seller first, and it still seems that F(x)tec's doing this. If th2 points

I imagine the reason he thought the camera button didnt take photos is due to the lack of feedback. No thumbnail, no shutter sound. I didnt think I was taking photos at first either. I do hope this is fixed shortly as this affects these first impression type reviews.2 points

Very common service "we can repair Samsung, Nokia, iPhone, Xiaomi, or any other mobile phone/tablet/gadjet", i don't think that in Russia i can find special FX Tec specialists. Serviceman says that "inner slider mechanism and disassemblying is like old Nokia n9, nothing very difficult".2 points

Well I'm also biased to kb phones in general and have also been waiting for years for a chance at another 5 row horizontal slider. I pre-ordered this and had a custom case made months ago. I just hope that this is a hit and if there is another one that some of the common constructive feedback is not ignored. I was probably not that constructive with the way I said "didn't seem like a good design". I do think a slider should be intuitive with the way it opens though. I guess if I ever get my phone, I will know for myself what I can only asertain from common denominators of reviews.2 points

Exactly. If you try to push it straight forward, it's a bit hard, but if you push at a certain angle at the very edge of the curve, kind of pushing up and not forward, it slides perfectly without an issue. Takes a week to get used to, and then it's only the satisfying "click" left.2 points

I imagine you found the same script as me. The reason I think mine not have worked right right as I didn't use the procedure for incremental ota, which I think must be necessary. For anyone else playing with this, here is direct link to OTA file from the source: http://hwfotadown.mayitek.com/ota/root_data02_2/idealte/idealte8998_9.0/QX1000/en-US/other/QX1000_EEA_20200106110245_20200106-1105/2020010614044563241.zip And here is xda thread with tool to extract: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/extract-files-ota-payload-bin-diff-t39591612 points

I found a script to extract OTA updates, and the most recent OTA seems to have modified boot.img. So we will want to use an updated boot.img with root.2 points

Yes, and please note if not using FinQwerty but the default driver for the qwertY layout, you should NOT select "US", but DE-select all tick-boxes. A bit counter-intuitive, I know. And this also means the symbols on the digits needs Fn (i.e. yellow arrow) rather than shift - and that is counter-intuitive too. ADD: Notice the slightly odd "None" offered by FinQwerty, the purpose of that is to offer the exact same thing as no tick-boxes selected. BUT this can be combined if you use more than one language.2 points

You do not need root to get to the files, but as normal users we are not able to overwrite/edit them (without root). /system/usr/keylayout and I think vendor_181d_product_5018_version_0001.kl /system/usr/keychars and I think vendor_181d_product_5018_version_0001.kcm (the .kl file is a 100% copy of the generic generic.kl , unused entries not removed) Vendor_181d_Product_5018_Version_0001.kl Vendor_181d_Product_5018_Version_0001.kcm2 points

The first question you will get from a CC company filling a claim, is if you have asked the company for a refund, and what the response was. And unless you want to lie to them, they are not going to waste their time on a case before you have asked for a refund yourself.2 points
-
No. Refund request of CC is there for you as your last step to request refund. It is an insurance and not something you should use in everyday life but in case of spoofing. If a company gives you a refund option, you should use it. Also, the very first step should be to contact company / seller and ask a solution in any cases. Otherwise, if you claim you CC insurance while you have other options, you harm the company and not being fair. Also, F(x)tec has always refunded on request, so you should request your refund from them instead of contacting your card issuer for no valid rea2 points

Especially since many people (shockingly and appallingly many; have people no patience anymore?) have stated that they got their refund by just asking nicely. Myself, I don't want the money; I want the phone, and I'll wait for it.2 points

A single water drop that comes in the wrong place can cause havoc on any device though of course very unlikely. If you were unlucky and the snow was contaminated with salt from the road, it can have caused more problems than pure water by itself. I have used the device in very mild rain (took an incoming call), so it not just the first water drop it sees that kills it.2 points

1. Two settings are relevant to this: A. In settings there are slider settings, these are settings specific to the keyboard. One says force landscape when keyboard open. If you turn this on, it'll work for the majority of apps. B. In quick-settings, you can turn on auto-rotation. This works for more apps than the force landscape slider setting, but some apps are still forced portrait no matter how you rotate. C. If you must turn apps landscape that are forced portrait, use split screen to put them on half the screen. 2. I havent played with this but I think it2 points

Root switch would be convenient, though probably not allowed on Google's Android indeed. Magisk does more than just simply provide root though. On that note I'd like to urge F(x)tec to provide updated flashable images along the OTA updates or at least updated boot.img that can be patched with Magisk later. It appears to be not technically impossible to scramble together the image file from an intercepted incremental OTA archive and the initial image, but I don't think there's been success in this yet. Root is technically not an advertised feature like the alternative OS support, but I hop2 points

It is MUCH more important NOT to use quick/fast charging in daily usage. Use an old say 0.5A charger, or a USB output from a pc or radio. It will be able to charge the Pro1 while we sleep, but does it slowly, and thus with marginally heating, and that really matters for the overall battery life. Use the quick/fast charging when in need only. It is like eating junk food. Occasional usage is not an issue - but don't do it every day. I have a lot on charging on my blog, e.g. start here2 points

Yes, it requires a lot more thought in the design, especially if you want to keep it easily serviceable too. And keeping water tightness after a repair might be an issue as well. Probably the parts that are required to achieve full water tightness are also more expensive and you have to be a lot more precise during assembly as well. Not to mention the testing. If you advertise something as waterproof you need to test if it really is, and that would be a few extra steps in an already complex manufacturing process. I'm guessing F(x)tec still have a lot on their plates with solving the issue1 point

Wel... my understanding is that boot.img contains the kernel and ramdisk. Aren't hardware drivers part of that? I'm trying to chase down mechanisms to extract the OTA updates, or at least get enough information from them to determine *if* they modify boot.img.1 point

True. Technically, even phones like the Pro1 could be made waterproof but it would probably increase the costs a lot.1 point

Glad you got it working, but sad to hear that it should be especially vulnerable 😥1 point

@Ilrilan I am happy finally it works again. As of holes, it is absolutely not easy to prevent water coming in. There are phones which does it by a lot of development effort, but only a very few are protected. My previous phone was also similar regarding water resistance.1 point
-
Hmm... that is not a good news. End result depends on the amount of liquid inside and on ingredients in water. I am also assume it is not covered by warranty, so if I were you, I would disassemble it - the phone itself seems to be relatively easy to disassemble (however, appropriate screwdrivers are mandatory). First of all, battery should be disconnected as soon as possible to avoid further damage of the circuits inside. Remember, that "water" is a really bad type of water as in winter, usually it also contains some type of material to be less slippery or become easier to melt.1 point

Contact support and we'll pay for it. To our understanding, we pre-paid that as you are in the EU, but maybe someone in the warehouse in Hong Kong made a mistake with your order and didn't pre-pay it.1 point

If you are willing to tinker a bit running an android 10 GSI works rather well except for some keyboard related bugs (it considers keyboard always open, backlight does not turn on, no fxtec magic to force landscape mode). [edit] I should read proper, didn't realize you mentioned coming from OLDER versions of android. Yeah, you will dislike Pie, and 10, as I also do xD.1 point
